Daily Chinese Reviews

Nice app but too expensive

terwillikerme on

For the current HSK1 it is around 70 USD for a year. Flashcards should not cost the same as a year of study materials written and audio. Otherwise easy to use. Maybe the price has changed, I cannot get the purchase page to open any more. Would have been more interested to say smaller fixed for hsk1/2 and then more for the additional and cool targeted word lists.

Very good

I don’t usually leave reviews but this is genuinely an amazing app. Probably the best part is how minimalist it is, no game mechanics or annoying graphics, helps me stay focused on just memorizing lots and lots of words. I just got the premium version and it is definitely worth it. Great work from these developers, especially since some other language apps (looking at you Duolingo) have gone off the deep end into annoying and unhelpful “features”. It would be nice to have a way of searching through your learned words, but in general the ai mechanic gives quite good explanations of terms. Maybe add a pack for 成语?

Pricing off the rails

Km4700 on

The app itself is great for learning Chinese vocabulary because it goes far beyond the basic learning level. However the new pricing model is too expensive. So I my main source for learning will be Anki. It’s ok to make money for the effort of creating the app, and compensation is deserved. Why not introduce an ad based version? That way you still make a bit on the version that’s free for users, and then maybe cut back on exorbitant subscription price? People can choose if they want to do away with advertising.

Good App, but pricing is way off.

It’s a fine app, but a recent update introduced unlimited — essentially, if you want to do HSK I and another set of flashcards, you need to pay $8/mo or $72/year. I don’t want a subscription, and certainly not for flashcards. I would be OK with buying the packs, but subscribing to them is not the right business model. If you need the reoccurring revenue, there needs to be reoccurring content. Some simple Chinese stories based on the pack would be fine, a podcast, or even access to a study group are all better choices.

Best vocabulary app

Sbaynham2 on

United States

This has been the best way for me to learn new vocabulary and the best way to learn Chinese characters. I wish there was a way to target newer words with free practice or at least exclude known words because I learn too slowly and want to spend more time reviewing without having to dig through stuff I learned weeks ago.

Actually makes me review Chinese but lacking examples

hoycetsui on

United States

I’m an American born Chinese that took a few Chinese classes in Highschool. It’s been a while since I learned and studied new words. But it’s been easier with this app. I really like that they have high hsk packs for intermediate folks. The already know option is great and helps avoid memorizing words you already know. The only thing is it’s missing examples. Words I’ve never heard of before are difficult to understand/use without examples. I have to use another app like Pleco or search online at yellowbridge to see how it might be used especially if it has multiple meanings. All aside, fantastic free app.

Just buy Anki

This app costs too much for glorified flashcards. just get anki and be done with it

Now I Have To Pay?

Shi_Xingchen on

I’ve been using this app for half a year to re-learn mandarin, and up until the recent update I have loved it, it has been perfect. Simple, easy to use, and most importantly, it didn’t cost money to open all reviews at once. I was very excited when I got the email about the update that included new HSK as I would be able to continue learning. In the email itself it never mentioned that one of the best features of this app, the ability to open as many reviews as there are packs, which has been free, is now something I will have to pay for if I wish to add any new vocabulary packs, or I will have to forfeit all of my progress so far. If you wished to do a subscription service, you should have added a new feature (such as the ability to combine all review words into one review), instead of locking a feature that had formerly been free behind a paywall. Because of this, I will no longer be able to use your app the way I have been, which is incredibly unfortunate for me. Even if, perhaps, new vocabulary packs cost a small, one time fee, that would be better than this, and I would have paid for those. These changes are a bit too much, especially when the email did not make clear that this “new feature” would be paid. I give two stars because I have gotten such great use of this app in the past, but the most important part of this app, for me, is no longer available, so I cannot rate higher. Please reconsider this. Thank you.

Good solid basic flash cards

QAmandaPanda on

United States

Really love using this and having the streak counter. PLEASE provide a way to reverse the cards ie have the English show first and then flip to the Chinese. A shake to undo would be nice for accidental swipes.

One of the best apps to learn Chinese!

Intrepid Meiguoren on

While I love some of the flashier apps like Duolingo, this app uses tried and true methods of memorization technique. It’s simple and effective.
