Description

The Dilemma Game app has been developed by Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) to stimulate awareness of, and an open and critical discussion about, integrity and professionalism at university. The app based on the EUR Code of Integrity which focuses on academic, social, and organisational integrity as well as the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity which focuses on academic integrity. Discussing all these forms of integrity is vital as it contributes to an open, safe, and inclusive (research) culture.
The game consists of dilemmas with four possible courses of action which the players can choose from. It is important to note that due to the complexity of integrity-related dilemmas, there is no winning or losing in this game. Rather, by defending and discussing these choices in the context of a critical dialogue, the game aims to support all university staff in further developing their moral compass.
The game can be used in a variety of settings, and therefore is has three modes: Individual, Group, and Lecture. For further information about each of these modes, please consult the instruction section in this app. The Dilemma Game app is a digitalized version of the Dilemma Game card game, that was developed as one of the initiatives of the EUR Taskforce Scientific Integrity (chaired by prof. dr. Finn Wynstra). In 2020 the game was digitized into an app by a taskforce coordinated by Mathieu van Kooten (Academic Affairs), in collaboration with EUR Web & App Development. In 2024 the app was upgraded through the broadening of the scope by the addition of social (and the option to add organizational) dilemmas.
The integrity expert reviews comments in the app for academic integrity are written by prof. dr. Hub Zwart and the ones on social integrity are written by prof. dr. Muel Kaptein. If other experts are consult this will be added in the expert review itself. This app is freely available to all institutions and researchers in The Netherlands and beyond.
