Description

Compose your own music for free with Dorico. Create beautiful music notation for up to eight instruments quickly and easily with the on-screen keyboard, drum pads and fretboard. Play back instantly with the included sounds and shape the performance with powerful MIDI editing tools. When your piece is finished, share it as PDF, audio or MusicXML, or print directly to your AirPrint-enabled printer. Perform using the built-in read mode, and annotate with your Apple Pencil.
Dorico is the award-winning music notation and composition software from Steinberg for macOS, Windows, and iPadOS. It’s easy enough to learn and use that it is used by students in schools, and deep enough that it satisfies the needs of the most demanding professionals in the worlds of concert music, music for film and TV, and music publishing. Dorico for iPad is fully compatible with Dorico for macOS and Windows, so you can work on your projects on the move on your iPad and in your studio on your desktop or laptop computer, or share projects with musicians using Dorico on any platform.
Dorico’s interface is split into four modes. In Setup mode, you can add and change instruments, create and reorder sections of music (called “flows”), and choose how your music will be formatted for your musicians into layouts. In Write mode, you can input and edit music and other notations using simple, well-organized toolboxes and panels. In Engrave mode (included if you buy a paid subscription to Dorico’s advanced features), you can make graphical tweaks to every item in your project. Finally, in Play mode, you have access to powerful sequencer-style MIDI editing tools, including piano roll and velocity editors.
Dorico includes built-in virtual instruments and effects to allow you to play back your compositions, and you can also easily use any compatible Audio Unit plug-in or external MIDI device (with optional subscription or Lifetime Unlock in-app purchase), and tweak playback using the on-screen Mixer.
Input music using an on-screen piano keyboard, or by connecting a MIDI keyboard to your iPad directly via USB or using a compatible USB-to-Lightning adaptor. If you have a Magic Keyboard or other external keyboard, you can make use of extensive keyboard shortcuts to work quickly and efficiently.
Dorico is free to use, allowing you to write for ensembles of up to four players. Register with your free Steinberg ID to increase the player limit to eight, allowing you to write for ensembles like string or wind quartet, or SATB choir. If you want to take your composition and arranging to the next level, you can buy an optional subscription or Lifetime Unlock in-app purchase to access more features and power: write for ensembles of any number of players, and gain access to Engrave mode, allowing you to make graphical tweaks to individual items anywhere in your project.

Dorico Reviews

Since the update the Apple Pencil comparability is much worse.

There are many many problems with Dorico 5 with Apple Pencil. It’s almost unusable now. Really a shame. At least, on my 2018 12,9” iPad Pro. No longer able to double tap anywhere to start editing, cannot select note lengths with pencil etc…. Kind regards, Sam

Great app! I try to buy the version with extra features but I keep getting a message from Apple that the transaction is not possible.

Respectable port of the desktop version, but an iPad is not a desktop

Let me start with praising the development team: a lot of companies are bringing out half-assed versions of their full programs but Dorico for iPad is as close to the real deal as it's going to get for iPad. That being said: it's a tablet. It's not a desktop. I know a fair share of people are replacing their laptops with iPads, but Dorico for iPad is borderline unusable without a mouse, something which kind of defeats the purpose of a tablet. I had hoped to use Dorico for iPad as a companion on the go to the desktop: for example to write (with the Apple Pencil) comments straight onto the score so I can get back home and find them there to work out. Or, at least be able to write in the comment box using the pencil as a compromise. Inexplicably, the comments system is the same as on the desktop: only input by keyboard and no use of the Apple Pencil at all. What I'm aiming at here is to not have to export my scores to PDF, import them on my iPad in a PDF reader to be able to annotate comments using the pencil, something I do regularly on the move, and I'm sad that this version of Dorico does not acknowledge the existence of the Apple Pencil.

Amazing app

Unbelievable that almost the whole Dorico desktop version is at you finger tips! More support for the Apple pencil would be nice indeed. Entering lyrics with more than one line without external keyboard is quite unpractical because one cannot use the arrow keys. So it would be nice to make the arrow keys available in the app. Up to 4 players the app is (and will remain) totally free!

Great app

First version works great already, curious what next versions will bring, including the use of pencil. Will Dorico allow the use of custom fonts?

Works great but can be super glitchy…

This app is amazing but it does have its ups and downs. One of the only things I wish it had was a way to make a score for a whole school band. Also it’s really glitchy if you try to add a bunch of different instruments. I love this app and will continue to use it in the future even if it’s still glitchy.

It’s great software for writing music. Very simple and efficient. I like to buy the pro version of Dorico. Im waiting for discount ☺️✌️

Low instruments

YERT BOY on

United States

There is a bug where lower instruments like the bass and contrabass variants of instruments don’t change according to the notation such as they won’t get quieter when there is a piano or a mezzo piano written. I am hoping that this get fixed soon.
