This game is fantastic and I’ve had a lot of fun. I’m giving it one star because I am currently experiencing a game ruining glitch. In the lighthouse dungeon there are no stairs populating so I cannot progress. Please fix this or let me know I am missing something.
Thank you
DQ2 is no longer the worst RPG of all time
After beating DQ1, I kept thinking “how on earth did 8 year old me figure all this out?” Answer: it took me 6 months and a notebook where I wrote down clues and mapped the caves and dungeons. I recall as a child starting DQ2 but don’t remember why I didn’t play it after a couple weeks.
DQ2 difficulty level has to be 100X that of DQ1. The world is 4X as big, you need a boat, the dungeons are nearly impossible to figure out without a guide/walkthrough, there are 147,000 villagers to talk to and decipher their Ye Olde English clues. DQ1 had a handful of items you needed to acquire in order to complete objectives. I can’t even guess how many were in DQ2. You gain 2 characters, each with their own rules on what armor and weaponry they can don. Do you sell items back to the shops or try them on your partner first? So much thinking involved.
It’s a slow go getting started and I bow my head in shame that I resorted to a walkthrough and auto save scrumming. Nonetheless, by the end I was addicted and neglected my wifely duties to beat this game. Wasn’t the biggest fan of Atlas. His power was very random and it didn’t seem fair that he killed my full HP level 36 Princess in one swipe.
But what the original game lacked is more than made up for in this version. It plays flawlessly, there are no ads or hidden fees. Very enjoyable RPG.
3rd Times the charm…
I have tried three times (at least) since the late 80s to beat this game. The original NES one was a little too hard for me at 9. My second try was on a flash Cart and I there was a save issue so I gave up. Shame on me for not staggering the 3 save slots… ;)
I am so glad I saw this through on my iPad Pro. What a Great gaming experience. It was just about perfect related to the little fixes and QoL features.
This version challenges the idea that DQ2 was the black sheep of the series.
Cheers
Great Classic RPG, but....
This game is great if you're a 2D rpg fan. I only have one pet peeve about this game, which is the language the game is using or tried to use. I understand the game takes place in a setting of a medieval type of era, but could they at least have the text be in the modern English language? Seriously, I had to analyze each sentence to understand and look for clues of what to do.
Nicely done
The grind is a bit real on this one. The monster encounter rate definitely higher than I recall, plus you must grind levels on about three to four different occasions. After getting all the end game gear and leveling all three characters to 46 the last boss was easy.
Played on a iPad, controls were good since you can move by touching any part of the screen. Translation was a bit mediocre.
Overall a good experience. I guesstimate about 35 hours to complete the game.
Tips: get the falcon blade (bought in town), don’t skip the mad cap (last cave, near end game) both items make a big impact.
Freezes
With update to iOS 14, the game freezes often on my iPhone 6S Plus.
Freezes last for 2-3 seconds, but they happen several times per minute, which really takes away from the enjoyment. Without the freezes, the game would easily get 5 stars from me.
Last update was 2 years ago. I wish SE would update this again to work well with the updated iOS.
Great Game
Needs controller support along with landscape view for it. Also the virtual d-pad is in the center of the screen when playing on my iPhone XS Max.
No iCloud save
I own iPad & iPhone. Can’t move saves between them. Great game but can’t rank higher since they won’t support a basic function. Also landscape mode would be nice.
Secret
If you are following the walkthrough that says go up the stairs in Beran and you’ll be in the outside world to Rendarack, but your in a room with an old man, then go DOWN not up to the stairs from the warp.
Good game, nice interface, beat Malroth at levels 40, 38, 35. Wish I had know prayer ring has limited number of uses before I sold 2 of them. Poof Dust
So good
This game is such a great evolution from the fist game. Now you get a boat and party and explore a bigger world with some great call backs to the first game where they both lead up to a great finale in Dragon Quest 3. Definitely worth a playthrough.
