FarOut Guides Reviews

Bad app

Cycling nico on

I don’t understand why we need this app. They make you pay to get gpx tracks that you can find for free on internet! What is the point? I have installed it, and deleted it 5 min later.

Helpful but outdated and flawed

JanVK2 on

Belgium

While this app has been a great help on our PCT hike it just has so many flaws. The underlying maps are fuzzy when zoomed in and barely readable. So many streams, campsites and other POI are missing. Much of the information (and pictures) is extremely outdated so you have to rely on the comments for up to date information. There is no moderation on the comments so trolling is common.

Got scammed €30+

Payment for one of the maps went through, got Apple confirmztion of the purchase. However, the map is still not accessible, 2 emails to support later -> still nothing.

Maps for Trail finding

Great for mountain biking the Continental divide Trail. Much easier to find where you are now.

This App Is Not Reliable For Navigation.

App does a great job of showing you where places are along the trail, water, camping, lodging, etc but I have lost the trail or the red line on this app multiple times & sometimes at the most crucial of times. Do not count on this app as your only mode of navigation. The only way you can restore trail on map is to get to Wi-Fi & delete & redownload app. Garmin In Reach maps have been the only maps that have been reliable throughout the entire length of the PCT. FarOut could be a good app but I gave it 2 stars for its lack of reliability on the IPhone. Very frustrating & could be, should be a safety concern. iOS 17.5.1

Mostly good

Keep in mind if you get the subscription, your experience will change depending on which trail you select. I’ve been using Guthook/FarOut since my 2020 thruhike and the PCT map & waypoints have been excellent, with now the additional features of comment ranking and water source flow meter. However, I got the subscription in order to get the Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT) offline map for a section hike, and there was an annoyance where it takes a half-second once you tap on a waypoint for the info to pop up. I didn’t have this problem with the PCT offline map.

Barely works

For a tool that is attempting to move to a subscription model, this experience is terrible. Have hiked the AT twice, once when this was Guthook and once now that it’s changed hands and the difference is insane. Half of the markers are gone, the GBS locating has gotten dramatically worse, any kind of estimation if you are off trail even a little bit is terrible. Honestly, I don’t know how it got this bad. They could’ve literally done nothing but changed the name and it would’ve been fine. Now, my recommendation to anyone looking to jump on the trail would be to just get an AWOL guide and not give this company anymore money.

I tend to be a solo hiker, and I really rely on a good app to help me on my journeys. FarOut app tells me where all the tent sites are what the elevation gain or loss is going to be. I can look far in advance or just a couple hundred yards in front of me feedback from other hikers about the water is such a critical component. Those who do social media it has a great system. When it comes on Hikes over three days, I always use the FarOut maps.
