Description

Flashnote Derby is a fun way for kids to learn and practice reading music notes.
Each race is a timed test in which the student identifies different notes in order to urge their horse on towards the finish line. Answering quickly and correctly will cause their horse to gain ground, while incorrect answers will cause it to fall behind. At the end of each race, students can review the notes they missed and see the correct answers.
Players can respond to flashcards by simply playing the note on their acoustic or MIDI instrument. They can also choose to answer by tapping letter buttons or playing a key on an on-screen piano.
The game is fully customizable to allow for any desired notes in the treble, bass, alto, or tenor clefs to be included. You can select ranges of notes, or several individual notes to focus on specific areas that need work. Notes can be shown with sharps and flats and key signatures can even be added to increase the challenge for more advanced students. The amount of time the player is given for each flashcard can be increased or decreased depending upon their age and level of experience.
Drills can start out simply, with only a handful of notes, and gradually be made more challenging until the full staff is mastered (up to five and a half ledger lines above or below the staff.) The more difficult the settings, the more points are awarded. The 'high score' is tracked so that players always have a goal to shoot for.
As a bonus, over a dozen instructional video lessons are easily accessible from right inside the app! Even children with no prior music instruction can start using Flashnote Derby right away to begin learning about the music alphabet, the staff, and how to identify different notes.
Because it can be set up so quickly, Flashnote Derby provides a perfect motivational tool for music teachers to use with students, even for just a minute or two of each lesson. Teachers have the ability to email homework assignments to their students for them to play on their own devices at home. Each player's performance is recorded so that their progress can be tracked. You can easily see which notes are most in need of review.
When students give up on their music lessons, it's usually because they find it too difficult. Learning basic skills early is key to laying the groundwork for future success. Flashnote Derby makes this process more enjoyable and helps students stay motivated in their music learning.
Sometimes it takes only a little extra effort to make the difference between success and failure. Download Flashnote Derby and get on the road to music reading mastery today!

Flashnote Derby Reviews

Setting the speed

yesak77 on

United States

I can no longer choose a speed or choose the number of flash cards. What happened? It used to work.....when I touch walk or gallop nothing happens.

Emailing Presets Stopped Working

Fruitloop800 on

United States

So disappointed that I can no longer email preset practices to students which was the main reason I bought the app and asked parents to buy the app. I’ve tried logging out, uninstalling the app, etc but nothing fixes it. The buttons to select “send the preset” or “cancel” do not respond when selected. I did email the developer but haven’t gotten a response.

More themes?

star0726 on

United States

So, I am asking if you could add more themes. Maybe some stuff like other animal races? Such as owls, dolphins, huskies, bunnies, and some other stuff. Please respond because I feel it has been a long time since an update, but it is still a great app for children to learn how to note read.

Great BUT

CaddFam on

United States

This a great app that has made piano lessons more fun for my students. I especially love the option to play the instrument. SUGGESTION: Have an option with no timer or race, just answering the notes, as some kids don’t do well being timed.

Low instruments don’t work

bassoon teacher on

United States

Tried playing this game with bassoon students today. The note recognition didn’t work when they were playing the correct octave, but when I started playing an octave above it worked.

Space race

My students LOVE the space race. It’s very exciting for them and keeps them trying to learn notes so they can win!

No updates for years, can’t do what I want

MrGoodReviews on

United States

I can’t use an external audio interface with this; it’s too buggy. I want my students to be able to silently practice their notes on guitar, and I can’t do that. No updates for 4 years means I doubt this or any future bugs will be fixed. This product may be near end-of-life. EDIT: website says last update was nov. 2017. Looks like two minor updates since then, the last being 2019.

Luke Bartolomeo does not respond!

I am a teacher. I've been using this app for several years after other teachers highly recommended it. The app itself is good for the most part, but I've had some issues that are not working for my studio. I started having issues with being unable to set a master device and clone my other devices. Although Luke followed up to my initial request, asking if I am logged in, when I answered his questions to explain this issue is not on my end as a user not being logged in, he never responded despite multiple emails. In good conscience, I can not recommend this to my students when the app developer is admittedly MIA. I will use other apps instead. I will update IF the developer ever fixes this and responds to my emails.

Exciting way to practice flashcards!

Spmetz on

United States

My students love this app! It’s so much more fun than the old flashcards. My own 3 kids fight over who gets to do it next and they love competing to see who gets the best score!

Glitches

Borealis2012 on

United States

Flashnote Derby is a great way for children to practice note reading. The pacing allows children to think before they answer and it records progress. However, the free teacher features are frustrating when you can’t access them. The system suddenly doesn’t seem to recognize my password and I can’t reset it myself . I’ve tried with several accounts and emailed the developer three times with no response or resolution.
