Description

Flip is a sample-based mobile music studio that was designed for a fast and intuitive work flow. Import your own sounds via AirDrop or the Files app, or record sounds directly with your device's microphone or a connected iOS interface. As soon as you record a sound it’s available to be played on drum pads as well as being mapped across a keyboard. Sounds can be subtly shaped or entirely transformed using the built-in effects and easy-to-use editing tools.
You can record a quantized or unquantized performance on the pads or keyboard. There is also a full piano roll where you can enter and edit notes and velocities.
Record knob movements or draw automation by hand to bring even more life to your sounds. Every automation lane can also have its own independent length, for polymetric and generative music possibilities.
Create up to 16 different sections for your song and drag and drop them into any order to create your arrangement.
Mixing and mastering tools allow you to finish a full track without ever leaving your phone. You can export your full track, or hit the tape icon and record the live output of the app while you tweak anything on the fly. Both options allow you to capture individual track stems as well!
A performance page lets you trigger your patterns live while controlling a global filter, assignable pitch bends and reverb sends, and a random fill generator.
Artist packs are available in-app at $3.99 or less, which include original sounds and projects from Andrew Huang, Cuckoo, Chuck Sutton, Kilamanzego, Pusher, and more on the way all the time.

Flip Sampler Reviews

As Great As Koala

But the approach is different - so it holds it’s own. Which is great. I own both Koala and Flip and they are equally beautiful instruments.

Very Nice, But crashes all the time

Please fix the bugs, unusable on iPhone SE 2020 with latest updates installed. App developer contacted me, I will change my review to 5 star when bug is fixed 😊

One of my favorite sampling apps, but could use some improvement.

Flip can definitely be used to make some great beats. It’s logically laid out, intuitive to learn, generally fun to use, and can do a lot, despite being limited to 9 sample pads (unlike the multiple banks of 16 pads each on an app like the IMPC). The help function is very useful and well-implemented. I love this thing overall, and it’s easier to use than the IMPC, but it does have some areas where operation can be frustrating and could be improved. I don’t know how feasible it’d be to have separate mixer settings, FX settings and samples for each pattern within a program, but it’d be highly useful and much appreciated. I can live without that, though. Limitations can breed creativity. More importantly, I’ve found the multitrack tape recorder and stem export functions to be buggy—which is frustrating, because they’re also incredibly useful for getting the sequences into a DAW as a multitrack session…when they work right. My stem tracks have randomly come out incomplete and different lengths (or with no sound) for no apparent reason; then when I try again with the same settings, everything renders perfectly and with matching lengths. Nasty clipping distortion also happens much more easily on rendered tracks than is audible when listening in the mixer; I’ve often had to re-render stems several times in a row, with elements of the mix turned down more and more, before I could get a clean result. The app also seems to have crashed on me a couple times, but it’s constantly autosaving, which is a fantastic feature that helps make crashes much less frustrating. Despite the sometimes annoying drawbacks, this app is fantastic value and I’d recommend it. Just be aware that it’s seemingly not perfect. Hopefully the stuff I describe will be fixed (or it’s all just the result of me doing something wrong). The app’s definitely still fun and useful overall.

Could be great if it weren’t so buggy

I want to love this app. Typically it’s a great tool for improvising & sketching out melodies & percussion ideas. But there’s unfortunately too much inconsistency & bugs with sample recording. Half the time it works great - I hit the record button & hum a note or make some sort of drum sound with my mouth & flip automatically find the starting point. But more often it seems to just be latching onto a bit of noise (according to the waveform) or sometimes the waveform looks correct, but it just won’t play back my recording at all. Not sure if this is just a problem for me or if it’s a common occurrence. Other than that bug it’s usually a great & fun app.

Beautiful creative music App!, but.

I love making beats on this software and messing with it on my computer, this is a seamless process of recording samples, to recording session, to saving to my iCloud, to editing software it’s amazingly simple. I would give it 5 stars but have a simple grape with the app now won’t let me upload things to it to use not sure why but gives me an error, but other then that I love this app I like restarting sample pads so it wasn’t to much of an inconvenience. I do have a update idea, have the option to maybe edit names of the pads page and also maybe have the option to change the colors of them. That would be amazing to helping me decipher my pads lol. But thanks for making a great app!

First DAW I bought when I got an iPad to produce music

TL;DR don't rely on any one DAW especially this one that's still new. An apple pen might come in handy more than not. It's about the sampler for quick ideas and fun not detail but it's still handy.------------------- Inspired by Andrew Huang and excited to hear of his new app I bought the latest iPad mini (not sure if it's as good as his phone he uses for the videos) and thought it was very innovative and still do. My problem is making mistakes on the daw is troublesome to fix when the playlist sequencer is the most difficult to use out of my others (beatmaker 3 and cubasis, even GB). The metronome isn't working for me either and sometimes you can lose samples if not saved correctly in flip. Itd be nice to handle your notes in sequence without richocheting a bunch of copy pasta and then having to tirelessly undo them individually. New criticism: I made a beat with a similar name to another project I did a while back ( I'm lucky I finished exporting that beat into a song or this would be a lot angrier) and when I tried to rename the beat i did a while back whilst still being on the newer beat I made, flip app overwrote what I made with my older beat with the new beats contents. This is something I couldn't undo with the undo arrow. This app is too old to have some crap like this happening but I'm grateful I was proactive about that beat or I'd have literally destroyed it from a simple mistake. Cmon guys.

Updates and still not a good app

So got a developer response to last review and the response was to delete a sample. Click click click click. Exactly my point it’s Not intuitive. I have to click down a bunch of menu diving to delete a sample. The developer didn’t listen to my review. They didn’t take anything to heart. They heard a criticism and shrugged it off. They should have listened to me and others saying we like the app it’s just not intuitive. Instead of blowing us off let’s make the app fun and useable. Below is my new updated review from 080123 I’ve had this app since day one. I keep up with all updates and truth is it’s just too complicated to get simple things done. Not a good app. Sounds good but UI is horrible. Such a waste. Also after new update tue pattern delete doesn’t work. And when I try to copy a pattern it won’t go to section I drag it but instead one Over from where I drag it. Can’t figure out basic things like piano roll. Sure re watch the tutorial videos everytime I try to like the app but I’m an experienced musician with every professional iOS music pro app and I can’t figure basic feature. This is Still not an intuitive app. Take more presses and time to get basic things done. And please for the sake of all that’s holy. Put labels on things. The ridiculous icons are a waste of space and energy. They aren’t intuitive. On a good note the app sounds good. Shame it’s useless compared to similar apps. Hey recently came across a new app that’s awesome and intuitive. Dreambeat or something lol. Dawnneat that’s it. I was making full tracks within 3 minutes with it. Compare that to an hit with this app and don’t even have a decent beat. I give up on this app. Deleting again.
