The FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP, developed by The FLORA OF VIRGINIA PROJECT (www.floraofvirginia.org), is the comprehensive catalogue of the plants of Virginia.
Whether a wildflower from a weedy roadside, a shrub from a coastal dune, or a tree from a deep Appalachian hollow, you can identify the species with The FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP.
The FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP leverages all of the data found in FLORA OF VIRGINIA, originally published in 2012 by the FLORA OF VIRGINIA PROJECT in partnership with Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia Native Plant Society, Virginia Academy of Science, Virginia Botanical Associates and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
The FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP and the FLORA OF VIRGINIA describe nearly 3,200 plant species native to or naturalized in Virginia in nearly 200 families. The FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP does not need an internet connection, allowing you to have access to the entire database no matter where your wanderings take you.
The FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP combines information from several other ecological data sets with the FLORA’s own data, including moisture regime, light regime, level of invasiveness, state and global rareness rankings, and listings as rare or endangered. Emphasis is on habitats, ecological earmarks of natives. The data is presented in 2 ways – Full Dichotomous Keys and a simple to use Graphic Key.
App features include:
- Original illustrations and photos
- Pop-up botanical glossary
- Range maps
- County location filter
- Ability to arrange plants by scientific name, common name, genus name, or family name.
- Botanical Help and a rich Reference Library
The Foundation of the Flora of Virginia Project is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2001 with the mandate to produce a modern Flora Virginica, originally published in the Netherlands in 1739 using the observations and collections of John Clayton. That objective took ten years to accomplish, culminating with the publication of the FLORA of VIRGINIA in 2012. The first version of the FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP launched in 2017. The Project is evergreen, requiring continuous work to keep the science current and improve usability. Flora of Virginia FAQ

Is Flora of Virginia legit?
✅ The Flora of Virginia app appears to be high-quality and legitimate. Users are very satisfied.
I studying plant biology in college at the moment and this app has been essential for my work and research in Virginia over the last year since I was first introduced to it. It contains an insane amount of information and is easy enough for beginners to navigate, but specific enough for expert use with the dichotomous key.
The new update that added links for definitions of botanical terms is one of the best features so far in the app. It was my only complaint before this, so I’m very happy that you all added that feature.
I cannot recommend this app enough for anyone studying plant biology or interested in identifying Virginia plants!!
Top-notch
I am a university professor of botany and plant taxonomist and rely on the Flora of Virginia for my work as a researcher and educator. This app contains all of the data of the printed flora, plus a user-friendly graphic key, excellent color photos, an intuitive search indexing system and - my favorite - state-of-the-art county-level distributions maps imported from the Atlas of the Virginia Flora group. I use this app nearly daily and can get my students quickly “up and running” on id using this tool. Highly recommend!
A Must Have App
I am an environmental consultant and a professional wetland scientist. I own the hard copy of the Flora of Virginia (which is also amazing) but the App takes the information to the next level! The same great info, but with pictures, maps, and graphic keys and new updates! It all works offline too which is great when working in remote areas and much lighter than the 5 lbs book. If you are an outdoor professional this is a must have app!
Great App
I love this app! It seriously is so helpful for identifying and learning about Virginia plants and ecosystems. I used it a ton for school (environmental science) and whenever I hiked in VA! 100% worth the money
Absolutely wonderful with one important suggestion
As someone who has only been getting into native plants in the last few years, I find this reference at my fingertips an amazing resource. It is well worth the money! As someone who is not formally trained in botany but wants to learn as much as I can, having a glossary button from individual species pages (like there is a ruler button on the side) would be amazingly helpful. Right now it’s a pain to remember the word I don’t know, back all the way out to the main menu, navigate to the glossary and look up the definition, and then search for the plant all over again. Some pages I may need to look up 10 words in the glossary so imagine how easy it would be to only hit the glossary button once and then close it and still be on the species page.
Completely worth the money
I’ve been working in horticulture and exploring natural areas for 5 years now and I have found this app incredibly useful. And in my spare time, the reading available is so interesting. Only wish I have is that more pictures could be uploaded for each species.
Amazing
Personally, this app is so worthwhile. Is a botanist on the eastern coast of the United States this resource is indispensable. It’s worth more than the hard copy of the flora of Virginia. With just this one purchase, as the years go by and things are updated so will this app be updated whereas the book will not. 100% worth it
Daily use App
As an ecology professional in northern VA, this app is invaluable to my work, easier to use and more convenient than carrying a field guide; very thorough, this app has taught me countless new plants
No image yet
I bought the app yesterday and was pretty disappointed in the large number of “no image yet “. I would expect them to at least have a sketch if they don’t have an image. Thinking that they should have told me upfront how many plants had 1 or more images and how many had none. Otherwise it looks like it will be a pretty nice App once they complete it. Review done in April 2018
Irreplaceable
Incredible app with volumes worth of information. No need to carry your flora out anymore! So glad the folk at the natural heritage put this together, congrats!
