Description

Use Fromage as your guide to worldwide cheeses, the #1 app preferred by cheese lovers. Fromage provides a convenient pocket resource of fantastic cheeses made throughout the world for your culinary exploration. The cheese library contains well beyond 1,600 world cheeses from over 35 countries and is continuously expanded thanks to suggestions from our established base of Fromage users worldwide.

Each cheese entry features artistically presented cheese photos, historically narrated flavor descriptions, website links to the producer’s dairy or fromager, and suggested best choices for complementary wines. You can add your own favorite cheeses to the standard library and include personal notes about any of the cheeses.

Searching within the library for that special cheese can be by name, country, milk-type, texture, or by your own custom tags (such as #atmystore).

So, if you’re a classically trained chef, professional party planner, cheese buyer, or just plain cheese lover, grab Fromage, your favorite wine, and experience the wonderful and historic flavors of cheese.

Fromage comes with the ability to create personal cheese notes, rate cheeses from 1 to 5 stars (included an “Avoid” rating), add cheeses to your favorite lists (Try, Buy, or Favorites categories), record tasting impressions with up to 70 tasting keywords, and search the cheese library.

You can also enter your own cheeses (including photos captured from your device camera) and list those cheeses automatically in the “My Additions” category. There is also a “Share” feature so cheese information can be sent (via e-mail) to friends or to the developer for inclusion in future versions of Fromage.

Internet or Wi-Fi connection is not required for program use, which is great for remote locations when no data plan is available.

When internet is available, Fromage uses iCloud to synchronize your cheese entries and notes between all of your Apple devices which can include iPhone, iPad, and Macintosh.

The application provides English, French, Spanish, and German languages when the iOS device settings are set to that language.

From the Developer –

Hello my name is Steve Welch and I want to thank you for your interest in Fromage. I have enjoyed developing Fromage and bringing great cheeses into your kitchen.

It is hard to believe this app began nearly 15 years ago with only a handful of French cheeses a short time after the “new” iPhone was introduced to the world. Fromage quickly became a favorite and best seller in the “Food and Drink” category and the first “Cheese” app available in the app store.

I also wanted to share that I was once a cheese maker myself, although it was some time ago. During the late ‘70’s, I worked summers at being a cheese maker at Rogue Valley Creamery in Oregon USA. Tom Vella was the owner and I made all sorts of cheeses including their vintage artisan Cheddar and Blue cheese’s. It was through this experience and the iPhone platform opportunities that led me to developing Fromage.

Reviews

Nice although limited

Nick'sName___________\ on

A nice app for recording cheeses to find/avoid in the future. The best I’ve found for this purpose (with the gold standard being Vivino for wine). Limited in that it only seems to work on iOS with all info stored on your phone/iCloud with no website or excel download functionality. It would be great to be able to follow other users’ reviews for inspiration (although I understand that this is a whole different design/hosting/cost model for the developer).

Best.App.Ever

This was my first app and is still my favourite. It's well designed, easy to use and it's about cheese. What more do you want? :)

Could be a lot better...

Macficcianado on

If the author didn't cut and paste the promotional content off each cheese producers website and if they cut out the pointless duplication and simply describe each different type of cheese, what milk its made from, where it's produced, how it looks, how it's stored, how it tastes and what to eat and drink with it...please sort it out!

You've broken it!

Mugse on

I like this app and often use it... Dinner parties, holidays etc. Was looking forward to the update and being able to add some cheeses we found in Europe.... But the latest update has broken the app. It opens on a different cheese with no way back to the main menu. I have opened and closed it lots of times, but its now impossible to navigate. Can you fix it please? A cheese lover.

Basic functions

Bad navigation, incomplete list, poor design. But at least you can add more cheeses, rate, comment and add as favourite

Poor, very poor unless you live in the USA

ExChampionsBlueCity on

This lists dozens of US and Canadian cheeses, largely unobtainable and omits vast numbers of European cheeses readily available in the UK but includes too many very marginal cheeses. No Welsh cheeses such as the very popular Pont Gar, Perl Wen, Perl Las and Bockburg to name but a few. Many French cheeses missing too.Wine matches next to useless. Complete waste of money I'm sorry to say.

Good idea but some glaring omissions and lots of poor cheese

Rich7317 on

Love the idea of this app and it's well set out. The problem at present is the content. This will probably improve. However no serious cheese shop would stock blended cheeses. Nor would they stock 'laughing cow cheese' (which has multiple entries with different herbs added to it) or cheeses with bits of fruit in....!! Glaring omission of "Vacherin mont d'or" one of the worlds great cheeses. Would suggest adding the following cheeses as well "vigniotte, godminster, old Winchester, cached blue, beenleigh blue, dolcelatte" But seriously get rid of the blended, herb filled and fruit filled cheese nonsense these are not proper cheeses.

This actually lists Laughing Cow and String Cheese! I mean for god's sake I thought this was a serious app. It also misses out Scotland my home country where there are may fine cheeses produced. What happened Steve did you run out of time? Oh and Parmesan is a trade mark name particular to that cheese produced in Italy not the USA which has enough of its own fine cheeses without having to plagiarise someone else's work.

A great database that you can add to

Bernie2843 on

I wanted to build a cheese database when I bought some Spanish cheese from the supermarket that I had never heard of before, but why invent the wheel? This is a fantastic cheese database that you can add to. As you add more and more it becomes more 'you' with your comments on your cheese. Thanks guys.

Basic basic basic

Aitch times three on

Really wish I'd read some reviews before buying this app. English cheese section is really limited. The first three cheeses i searched for were not listed so I gave up. No info on whether cheeses were suitable for vegetarians or not. I would get a refund if I could, although it's not that expensive, I have totally wasted my money. Awful.
