This is a good way to keep up with business news without having to deal with the fiddly and cluttered FT app.
It’s also fantastic to not have any readers’ comments, so that you can properly concentrate on the actual story.
And it’s good value for the price - in fact it’s such good value that I’m a bit suspicious that there will either be a price hike or this app will get binned! So enjoy it while it lasts! :)
Feature request for the devs - please add a white-on-black “dark mode” for reading articles. Please also fix the rendering of some hyphens which get lost when reading articles.
Fullscreen mode
Hiding these black bars on the top and the bottom would be really nice feature
Cannot Fullscreen
As a reviewer has mentioned before, this app is PressReader under the hood. Unfortunately, the experience in this app is nowhere near as good as the actual PressReader app. Most egregiously, you cannot full screen the paper, so when zoomed in the bottom text is cut off and unreadable.
I’m a huge fan of the FT’s coverage, but this digital edition needs an update to make it usable.
My preferred flexible way to read the ft
Positives:
- clean interface and easy to use
- set automated download of copy each day
- different modes of viewing the “paper”, both useful
- audio of articles is excellent as means you can consume whilst on the go or performing menial tasks
Negatives:
- disappointing there is not a 1.25x audio speed, 1x is slow and 1.5x too quick
Great idea, bad execution
The app idea is great and much needed, but it just doesn’t load the most recent days paper. If I open the app at 6am to find the days paper, it just isn’t there 9 times out of 10. It sometimes then appears if I force close the app and restart it repeatedly.
Good, but fullscreen mode is broken
This is a white labelled version of the Pressreader app, and its nice to use, has a good image quality, and being able to open an article in a reader view is really nice.
However, it seems to be impossible to view in full screen on my iPad mini (i.e. you can’t hide the ui by tapping on the page - the top and bottom bare is stuck on my screen permanently when reading). I think this is a bug because it works in the main Pressreader app, and the settings in this app reference full screen mode. Its a bit of an annoyance with the limited screen real estate on my iPad mini.
The main Pressreader app also has page previews at the bottom of the UI, which is a really nice feature sadly missing from this app.
If you're a former FT Kindle subscriber, this is for you
If you're missing your Kindle FT subscription, then this is the next best thing. It's very nearly as good as the experience of reading the FT on the Kindle was, and is the best substitute option I've found so far.
No search????
Have just subscribed to the FT digital edition, opened this app and… there is no way to search articles!! I have looked all over the app and a search facility is simply not there Come on guys, that’s not right. In this day and age, we should be able to search the content we have subscribed to.
It is shameful of the FT to charge the prices it does, yet not provide a basic function.
Worth the wait
Been promised for a while….and does not disappoint especially the ability to download for offline reading. Excellent!
Excellent - long awaited option!
Well done FT developers for pushing this app out & for its execution. For digital subscribers that value the importance of editors determining what stories should be highlighted (and where) - i.e being able to view the print version and not wishing to be drawn down the rabbit hole of hyperlinks and reader comments this app is a warmly welcomed addition to the FT stable of apps. Great job!
