A perfect speech-therapy app!

Fun with Directions is a ground-breaking app for the iPAD, designed to provide a fun and engaging way to practice listening, following directions, colors, spatial concepts, auditory memory and auditory processing. From the simplest of directions (“Touch the cat”) to the more complex (“With your orange crayon, color the large one that is a furry pet and likes to chase mice”) your child can grow and learn with this game over time. Colorful, vivid art and animations against a white background combine to create a complete game experience without visual clutter. Sound effects and surprises keep the game engaging! This app is a great choice for a toddler/preschooler, or any young child who would like to practice listening to or reading directions!

Included are ten concepts: Give, touch, open, close, top, middle, bottom, push, color, erase.

Features include settings for data collection, individual (up to 75users) vs. group play, automatic advance or manual advance to next direction, touch/drag OR touch/tap option, text on/off, (to practice reading vs. listening) selecting specific concepts, and the desired level of play: easy, intermediate, and advanced.

An added bonus that is included in this app is the optional “Superstar Direction” which allows additional practice for remembering (“What did you have to do?”) but also expressive language. The child’s response is recorded and played back. Superstar Directions can be set to a variety of intervals or turned off completely.

Too vague

Theladyg5 on

I like this app, BUT you request need to require a more specific response. Right now, color, erase and give all require simply dragging the crayon / pencil / item to a location. I had expected erase and color to require scrubbing the crayon or pencil, but they do not. It doesn’t even require the child to know the difference between a crayon and eraser! Close, open, push and touch all respond as correct for simply touching the item. No swiping involved. Please update and require a more specific response to count as correct. As a speech therapist, I want to know if the child actually knows these words and not just to tap on a picture.

Fantastic

I love this app!!! I like the "repeat" feature as well as some of my students need repetition.

Need to fix bug

Speech4u on

I also really like the app; however to pay $15 and have bugs is unacceptable. I am obviously not the only one have trouble with the previous graphics staying on the page causing my students to be unable to follow the directions...very frustrating. I have attempted to send an email, but it bounced back. Hope they get this and fix the bugs!

Good practice

I like this app and so do the kids. For the SLP I would recommend taking your own data and not relying on the app's data tracking as it only tracks data for one concept of a multi-step direction.

Must have for SLPS

EI Slp on

This app is fantastic for working on following directions with multiple modifiers and prepositions. My students love using this app. They think it's a "fun" app, not a "work" app. The app has 3 levels: easy, intermediate and advanced. You can work on all of the included concepts or customize the concepts for each student. You can create groups with each student working on different concepts or levels. The app can record data on a student's performance for each concept per session. Data can be printed or emailed. There are no ads or in app purchases. There's a big difference in difficulty between the intermediate and advanced levels. I would love to see a level between the two. I'd recommend this app for speech therapists and for parents of preschoolers who need help with complex directions and directions that include prepositions.

Nice app

bajebooth on

Nice app for assessing the ability to process and follow direction. One is given a direction to follow, and options to carry out that directive are illustrated. The user then selects from a varied field of options. The layout is simplified without clutter, so the listener can tune into what is expected of them. There are options to customize or change the way directions are given - verbal or text. As the listener gains in experience, the questions become more complex. I would love to see an adaptation to this already fine app to be able to change the background color from white to say light yellow or green so that the glare of the white back-lit background does not tire the user's eyes as much. The "Superstar" Direction is cute, and reinforcing as the user gets a chance to proclaim what they just did. I would recommend this app for home and clinic use.

Crashing

KarenNewt on

Love the app for my younger speech kids, but today it was crashing when I tried to add new groups. Is there a limit to the number of groups allowed? I have several iPads, and the program crashed on two different ones tried.
