Highly acclaimed in its four print editions, Bryan A. Garner's Garner's Modern English Usage is now available on your iPhone and iPad. This extraordinary reference tool contains over 8,000 entries and essays that reflect usage lexicography at its finest. Designed with the mobile user in mind, Garner's Modern English Usage is searchable, eminently navigable, and fully citable.
GMEU is the liveliest and most compulsively readable reference work for writers of our time. It delights while providing instruction on skillful, persuasive, and vivid prose. Garner liberates English from two extremes: both from the hidebound "purists" who mistakenly believe that split infinitives and sentence-ending prepositions are malfeasances and from the linguistic relativists who believe that whatever people say or write must necessarily be accepted.
The judgments here are backed up not just by a lifetime of study but also by an empirical grounding in the largest linguistic corpora ever available. Garner has made extensive use of big data to include ratios of standard terms as compared against variants in modern print sources. No other resource provides as comprehensive, reliable, and empirical a guide to current English usage.
If you're concerned with writing and editing, GMEU will prove invaluable to you. Garner illustrates with actual examples, cited with chapter and verse, all the linguistic blunders that modern writers and speakers are prone to, whether in word choice, syntax, phrasing, punctuation, or pronunciation. No matter how knowledgeable you may already be, you're sure to learn from every single entry of this resource.

Garner's Modern English Usage Reviews
Extremely Useful and Portable
An excellent reference work. The application is quite convenient; unlike the book, you can carry it with you wherever you go. Very fast and efficient for looking up particular words and phrases, which is the primary task for a usage guide. Worth the money. Highly recommended.
The Best
Useful and outstanding. One of the few works that I have in both print and electronic editions.
Love GMEU
GMEU is the incomparable source for American English usage. I keep the book at my desk at work, but with the pandemic I needed something for home. I really like the app, but have two issues. 1. As many have mentioned, the text size should be adjustable. 2. I can’t figure out how to use the Favorites list! I’ve tried everything and nothing works. I’m quite disappointed because I was really looking forward to using that aspect.
Great content, app stopped working in iOS 13
I’m leaving this review to, I hope, get someone’s attention. I have, and have read, all of Garner’s books and they’re all great. No issue there. But the app has suddenly stopped working on 2 phones and 2 iPads I have running iOS 13. The app appears not to have been updated in a year.
I’ll update the review if this is fixed.
Great content, terrible style
The guide cannot be beat: authoritative discussions of just about every style or usage question imaginable. But the font is too small, the text is unattractive, and there are no options for adjusting the appearance. Disappointing!
Incomparable
The best app of its kind that I know of. I am a professional editor and consult this app every day or just about. Fast search for the best usage guide makes this truly indispensable. The quizzes are great fun and educational too. A no-brainer, even for the price.
Worth The Investment!
I can't express how cool (nerdy-cool) it is to have this indispensable reference tool on my iPhone and iPad. It's easily navigable and more efficient than I was expecting, given the volume of information. I would also love to see an app for the Chicago Guide to Grammar, Usage and Punctuation. Please! That would be over-the-top awesome!
One other, ongoing request: please keep the updates reasonably current and the app running smoothly. The biggest letdown happens when a great app is neglected or abandoned. It happens far too often. Thank you!
An indispensable guide for careful speakers and writers
Garner’s Modern English Usage is the best current usage guide to good English and may be the greatest usage guide ever written. Having it in an iPhone app form makes it even more useful. Garner is to the 21st century what H.W. Fowler’s "Dictionary
of Modern English Usage" was to the 20th. He fills the void left by modern dictionaries and guides that are too squeamish to give sound advice on speaking and writing good
Standard English. If you aspire to be a careful speaker and writer of good English, make this book (and app) a trusted, frequently consulted, lifelong friend.
GMEU
Exceptional.
Perfect.
Easy-to-use; searchable; nonpareil; and can answer any English usage question you throw at it.
