Please make the sequel! It was as such a delight. I’m not a gamer, but this one kept my attention and amused me to no end. Bravo to Katherine and the team at Choice of Games.
Only covers freshman year with a very unfulfilled ending. Can't recommend.
This game has definite promise, but there were a couple game-breaking bugs that seriously detracted from enjoying the game (there's a loop wherein I basically ended up having to do the same action five times that should've been only doable once before the story continued, for instance.) Overall the game has promise aside from those immersion-breaking programming bugs (if they are indeed bugs and not just narrative railroading to get your stats where the programming requires it to be in order to continue the narrative) and a couple other story points that stretched the suspension of disbelief.
This was my first Choice of Games game and it definitely got me interested in trying more. It was longer and had more action and choice than I was expecting. The writing and world-building was top-notch. I loved all the little asides with villain tropes and the class descriptions, as well! I had a great time playing as a Thriller Freshman and I really hope there is a Sophomore year in the works!
There are a lot of “Choice of” games that have a nice self contained narrative while still setting up for an overarching story. This is not one of them. I felt like my choices were having an effect on gameplay so I was excited to see how the story played out but it just abruptly stopped with no pay off or conclusion. Very disappointing. My recommendation would be to avoid this until the sequels come out.
The story was fun. All in all, I enjoyed it. What I would LOVE, Choice of Games, is for checkpoint saves so I wouldn't have to restart the whole book. PLEASE make this a thing. Cheat codes or tips for better stats at the end of a full play through would be freaking fantastic also, but I feel the saves are really important.
As always, this lived up to me expectations immediately. I can't wait for more! Except, might I request a new feature? I'm aware that the majority of CoG's games are kid-friendly, and the ones that aren't are because of explicit cursing and excessive gore. However, since my brain won't stop nagging me about it, would ya'll perhaps create a section dedicated to the older community, that gives you the choice whether you want to go into explicit detail about what goes down in bed? It's just a little thing that I think a few buddies of mine would appreciate because they're dirty-minded (and so am I) and wow I feel like this is going to come off as the strangest and prevented request ever. Oh well.
I love this story, it turns the classic hero story into a villain story. My only real issue is a possible bug towards the end of the story, it seems to just loop through the same section until it comes to the climax and you're just thrown into it. Hope an update fixes it soon.
I'm a huge fan of Choice of Games to begin with, and I feel Grand Academy really makes the most of the program; it's enjoyable, well-written, and the kind of game I envision myself revisiting again and again down the road. I particularly enjoyed that we're able to choose our Genre as a villain; while it doesn't affect much besides aesthetics, that's really about what you can expect from Genre-driven fiction anyway. Also I would die for Xi if that was an option.
