Pitch trainer - Harmonize

Just intonation ear training.

Published by: Toshihiko Arai

Description

An app anyone can enjoy with which you learn to have perfect and relative pitch. Especially suited to those learning the chords of just intonation.
This app is beloved by many, from those who want to be good at karaoke to brass band and orchestra members.
Hello everyone.
This "Music Game" app is the sequel of my previous work.
This time, the focus lies on learning double-stop notes (just intonation).
In this app, two sounds are played at the same time, but the decision is calculated on the basis of just intonation.
For example, when matching major third "do" and "mi", there is a gap of 4 semi-tones, so in equal temperament there is an interval of 400 cents.
However, in just intonation, "mi" has a 5/4 frequency ratio to "do", so when calculated, the interval becomes (1200 x log2 (fE / fC) =) 386.3... cents.
This means that for the piano (equal temperament) interval you have to take a minor interval of approximately -14 cents.
Therefore, use the piano sound only as a guide, and match the tone of the sound by feel.
The trick is to operate it so you lose the beat. It will suddenly become a clear sound at a certain position. That will be the just interval tone.
※Chords reference tone is A=442 Hz.

Pitch trainer Reviews

Pretty good

Helps me wth violen tuning but can get a little annoying if the pitch gets too high

More ads than any app I've ever used

Every time I click on any button on this app, there is a 3/4 chance of a long, unskippable ad being played. Just about unusable.

The UI feedback is really clunky

Alina Michelle on

United States

The sliders on the left and right provide no visual feedback if they are being changed, and their parameters extend beyond the screen. So at times it’s hard to tell if you’re actually successful in adjusting the tone. Having the slider be a wheel, (visualize a mouse middle click wheel) would be a better system. The left slider seems to go behind the pause button, it’s hard to tell where the sliders actually end on the screen. If you want to continue raising the tone once you hit the top of the screen, the game instructs you to start at the bottom again. It’s not clear if that’s the same case for continuing to lower the tone after you touch the bottom of the screen, since the pause button is there. Does it work this way only if you start at the edges, or can you change the upper/lower limits of the slider if you start closer to the center? The UI doesn’t make that clear, and the fact that it’s a text box telling you to start at the bottom again is already an example of bad UI. There are also ads after every screen, but those can be turned off for a single $9.99 purchase. It’s a neat game, but the instructions and interface are way to too awkward.

I use this excellent game to train my violin and viola students to hear and match pitch well. Students of all ages have found it to be fun, challenging and helpful. Thank you for creating this game!

Ways to Improve Ap

esg287 on

This app could use: Option to not have the harmony play at the beginning of the exercise for more of a cold challenge. It’s made easier when it the first thing you hear is the target harmony More timbre options (timpani would be great) Have the exercises progress in randomized sequences within each interval, so it’s not just going up by step each time. You start just hearing a step wise sequence instead of truly listening for the interval Have a randomized mode where intervals are switched up, so you have a P5 followed by a m3 followed by a M6 for example.

Great Ear Training app

Needs more info in levels

CrunchyMom208 on

United States

Would be good to have a little info on each level as to which octave you’re supposed to toggle to. At first you’re supposed to take the pitch an octave above the sound that’s played. Randomly it switches and the pitch you’re changing starts out an octave up and you’re supposed to match it exactly to the note given.

What happened to the note names?

Norton18 on

United States

The previous version had which note one was aiming for - why is this no longer available? Updated in 2019: still no note names. Please allow this as an option!
