I really like practicing with this app. It really makes you listen to the beat and take instruction from it and helps prepare you for playing with others where tempo can change.
Very cool and practical idea. My main gripe is that, given that it’s presented in a finite, song-like format (ie 8 bars of straight time then x bars of wonky time and 4 bars to close it out) and not just endless clicks, I could really use a count in. As is, I push start and the song is going before my hand can pluck. I could hit start with my nose or other appendage, but that’s not optimal. Also, being able to choose an exact tempo would be nice. That way you could use this to practice actual songs in specific tempos that may be faster or slower than than the 10 or so included increments of time. We’re in the digital world; how difficult would that be? Being able to adjust how many measures of this or that might be nice, too, but that doesn’t bother me as much. Still for what it is, it’s quite an ingenious idea.
What an odd app. So creative and fun - it wiññ definitely male you listen more!
I use this app every single day. It has become an important part of my practice and I absolutely love it. But the volume of the click, even with the device volume all the way up, is often too quiet to hear while playing over it. Contrast this to metronome apps like Tempo or Metronomics, where the sound of the default click is crisp and loud - AND they let you choose from several options of click sound. I have tried to solve this by using Bluetooth headphones/speakers to get more volume - but whenever I use Bluetooth the app seems to completely drop beats, sometimes several beats are muted at a time, or it will stop and start the rhythm, ruining my practice flow. Fix these issues and I will put my rating up to a much deserved five stars.
An amazing tool! This will definitely help prepare you for those gigs where the drummer gets a bit excited during a tune. Or if he's been drinking. Or if you’ve been drinking. Anyway, love this app. Thank you Wayne! Definitely better than a bad slice!
What an unbelievable tool this is. I was one of those weirdo kids that LOVED playing with a metronome. This is another level. While a metronome will teach you to concentrate, this forces you to concentrate and listen. Brilliant.
Building skills with a metronome is crucial to every musician but it’s only half the story. Real music made by humans requires constant attention, listening, and adjusting to an ever shifting pocket. Wayne’s app trains your ear in a fluid landscape of tempo. Super fun, challenging, and informative. A must have for any improviser.
Wayne Krantz is a smart guy! Just from his music you can tell but also his great book The Improviser’s OS. This app is another great idea that helps with a problem that a lot of people have but don’t know they need help with....it definitely has helped me! It’s not enough to have strong internal time, you need to line up better with fluctuating external time,i.e. humans! I highly recommend this app to help you raise awareness.
Wayne Krantz is known the world over for his innovative compositions, ground breaking guitar playing and general all around riffery. What some people may not know is, he has talked at great length about his refreshing take on music, in his understated book, An Improvisor’s OS. What’s more exciting is, Humanome is an equally brilliant solution to a very universal problem for any musician. How do I keep great time? In this app, the tempo shifts subtly to wildly, so the practicer trains themselves to listen to where the beat is and get scary good at putting the next note right where it needs to be. They actively engage in playing with the beat, building a strong internal clock and becoming a world class listener and perhaps a world class groove machine. Be the first kid on your block to have better time than a Swiss watch! All of this, for just 2 dollars. You can’t even get a decent cup of coffee for that much bread.
Neat way to practice, I like the short sessions. Update: I reported a bug and it was fixed the same day!
