Idealist Job Search Reviews

Back button makes app inconvenient

MojoNJay2544 on

United States

When searching you are able to go back to the search via that “back to results” button. Unfortunately, if you go into a listing organization’s profile or click on any of the tabs for more information, you are not able to toggle back and have to start your search from the beginning. Makes using the app less desirable than webpage.

Freezes mid-use

The app freezes and doesn’t work very well. The website works better.

Back button would really help

WorstOlympicCoverage on

Great start just like the site but adding a back button would really help with UX.

app doesn’t work at all, it’s bugged out

I can’t even use the app it just shows a white screen. It’s completely unusable and needs to be fixed

Just like the site!

I like that this app is just like the Idealist website. It’s so much easier to search and apply to nonprofit jobs.

Great for finding social-impact work

This app is simple and easy-to-use. I love how it offers jobs at nonprofit organizations, as well as tools to help me in my social-impact career!

Jobs posted are great, App functionality is really lacking

As others have shared, I recognize that Idealist itself doesn’t identify as a site for job seekers. The problem is two-fold: 1) the platform hosts excellent position descriptions, often ones that I don’t see listed elsewhere, and it beckons for you to use it for your job search 2) the actual job search feature and functionality is frustratingly awful. Start with the fact that jobs are lumped in with two other options that randomly shuffle when you open the app, daring you to click “Internships” by mistake because you moved faster than the shuffler. That is OBNOXIOUS. Second, it’s easy enough to like/save an interesting job but actually viewing those saved jobs later is an option hidden within several menus that are not intuitive. When you find a saved job, there is no way to mark it as applied or update the status to keep track. Rather, you can unsave it or just leave it there in perpetuity. WHY? If the career opportunities/job seeker feature is something that so many people want and would use (as evidenced in just these App Store reviews), why on earth wouldn’t Idealist jump on this? I don’t get it. Maybe they themselves can’t figure out the jobs feature enough to post a position to hire a developer to make it useful? Just a thought.

Not awful, but not far from it.

Their focus is certainly on the social aspect of the site, which I’ve never used. Like many, I downloaded to aid in my job search. It works for that. How well it works, however, depends on who you ask. It’s not terribly intuitive. In fact, at times, it seems purposefully confusing. In order to see the jobs and volunteering opportunities you have to scroll to the bottom and tap an unlabeled button. Why they thought this was a good idea, I do not know. Next comes the part I find most baffling, if not a bit infuriating. After tapping the unlabeled button and clicking “jobs - internships - organizations” you’re taken to a section where you can choose one of the three. The buttons are lined up at the bottom. The order of the buttons is randomized. Why. WHY is it randomized? When the page first loads, it will load in the order it appeared in the last time you visited. A millisecond later, it shuffles. So I’ve accidentally clicked the wrong thing many times. Apart from the strange decisions they’ve made with the UI/UX, it’s functional. You can search, the filters work well, etc etc. I feel a bit bad complaining about a free app that is genuinely helpful, but what the heck are these people thinking?

Pointless

I downloaded this thinking it would be a job searching app like the website, but it is just a way to see profiles of other people who are looking for jobs. I just want to search for jobs, not share my info and location with everyone else.

Get rid of the social aspect

akmdacjcndeiwkxnsnwizltne on

United States

I downloaded this app to search for an apply to jobs on the go, but this appears to just be a social media app that no one is actually using. Totally pointless. The map with circles is completely meaningless and it’s very hard to actually search for an find people or organizations. I just want to be able to view my idealist profile, the jobs I’ve saved and be able to apply to them from anywhere. It looks fancy, but has terrible UI/UX.
