WHAT EXACTLY CAN I DO WITH iMIDIPatchbay?
As a keyboard player, you most probably know about splitting and layering sounds. While this can be done relatively easy on professional keyboards, it becomes more complex if your gear consists of multiple keyboards and sound expanders. iMIDIPatchbay makes building such configurations a lot easier than it has ever been before.
After connecting your keyboards and other MIDI devices to the iPad, you can easily create split zones and assign sounds of your MIDI devices to them. It's also possible to route the MIDI data to other apps if they have a virtual MIDI port. Furthermore, you can filter out controllers which is great if you want e.g. pitch bend or sustain to affect only a subset of the active sounds.
WHAT DO I NEED TO GET STARTED?
You need a CoreMIDI interface to connect your keyboards and sound expanders to the iPad.

iMIDIPatchbay Reviews

in-app purchase (have to buy again for 2nd ios device)

Jo Bleau on

Hi ! This is a great app, but i am not pleased with the fact that i have to buy the "setlist fonction" again to use with my ipad. I first installed the app on my iPhone 6s with in-app purchase for setlist fonction, and decided to download it on my iPad air for free since i alteady purchased the app and setlist function$. To my surprise, once i installed the app on my iPad (cloud purchase-free), it doesnt give me the functionality of setlist with it (already paid for iPhone). This is not acceptable. Can you please rectify this issue and activate this fonction for all my devices without having to pay each time ... Launchpad Novation allows all in-app purchases free of charge for all other devices (audio import function etc..) , so this should not be a problem to do. Thank you for your understanding.

Indispensible App For Multiple Live Keyboards

PDMcL on

This app flawlessly executes simultaneous programme changes to 3 keyboards and 2 modules in a live performance context. No more hard copy setlist sheets taped to my keys with program change notes that can't be read in the dark - and no more mental distraction during performance trying to figure out the most efficient way to push all those buttons to prepare for the next song when I should be focussing on the song I'm playing. This app will open up so many other possibilities with regard to splitting/layering and parameter modification on the fly - read other reviews for that. In my case, the setlist feature is key, with the ability to easily and quickly alter song order - or - delete or add songs to the setlist. Before, I had to get my 5 other band members to nail down the set at least 12 hours in advance so I could print out my song notes. Changes just before going on stage risked longer waits between songs - something that totally ruins the vibe on a dance floor. With this app that inconvenience is gone. Additionally, this app has the capacity to load pdf files co-relative to each song in your personal song directory/setlist. These files (or sheets as they are named) could be chord charts/lyric sheets/notated manuscript or whatever your job requires. One more thing - an essential aspect - all of your settings are - with a single touch - uploaded to DropBox - a backup is reliably available. (You upload your 'sheets' via your computer) Not only that, you can also download that same file to another device. I have this app in my iPad, my iPhone 6 and my disused iPhone 5 as 'device backup'. SUMMARY: Johannes has been meticulous in his considerations of what this app should do, how it should do it, and in the creation of a logical graphic interface to facilitate an intuitive experience for the new user. He is available via email to provide assistance and tutorials are available on YouTube. FINALLY: I've read reviews where people said this costs too much. REALLY??? Nonsense. The gear I buy, the gigs I do and the people that come to them matter to me. What this app costs (some features must be purchased from within the app if you want/need them) is no more than the cost if 2 sets of guitar strings. What this app does lasts - guitar strings don't. This app has totally freed me up to just do what I love to do - play music !!!

A great solution for live rigs

Ikonowerk on

My biggest hurdle with IOS music has been splitting IOS app sounds to different parts of a keyboard controller. imidipatchbay solves that problem, and reduces the amount of gear I need for live performance. Now I can control multiple app sounds, zone them to different parts of a single keyboard controller, and load different app sounds and zones as patches depending on the song. Initial set up was a little difficult, but I don't fault the app. My MIDI knowledge is not great. The developer did take the time to provide support via email, and now I'm set up properly. The greatest thing about this app is that my live rig has been reduced to an IOS device and a light keyboard controller. No more heavy workstations, laptops, etc.

Great app!!!

This simple app helped me turn a midi controller and a Ipad in a fully working synthstation! A must have if you need to control program changes on differents apps, as well as splits and layers!

Limited and won’t do what i want. Support forum has error codes and doesn’t work

I was hoping that i could easily switch patches during a song. I can load a patch with a song selection but there should be an option to select another patch on the same device with the click of a button. I can do this with BandHelper and Yamaha setlist maker but not this program. I guess i was hoping for too much.

After new update appWorks perfectly again

The Virtual Keyboardist on

Update - after the latest update the app works perfectly again. I just hope that updates are made more frequently in the future when a known issue exists. I’m thankful for this latest update. I’m a professional keyboardist who has used iMIDIPatchbay for years whith phenomenal results in the past. Unfortunately, as of iOS14, the app started having major issues related to PDFs and stuck synths which were never addressed. The developer used to provide excellent responses and quick fixes, but for a long while he has not responded to issues raised in the forums or directly. I sincerely hope he is ok. The app is no longer stable enough for pro use on iOS and I’m not upgrading to 15 until I can migrate all my music to another app. Just an FYI to any keyboardists considering this app.

Great App for what it does but.....

I really like this app. It’s well thought out but I bought it a few years ago for hardware synths and just tried to incorporate my iOS synths ( Magellan , IK B3, etc ) and imidipatch bay isn’t showing up on any app to choose as the midi in. Nit sure if it’s the app is older, maybe not updated for a while, but for me has only worked for hardware, which is a shame.

Base good, extra master upgrade useless

Roboprog on

Hook up your keyboard on say MIDI channel 1, and route it out to up to 4 apps or external devices, with program change codes and some CC adjustments like volume, reverb or chorus? Works great. Don’t buy the multiple masters in app purchase, though. As far as I can tell, the additional “master” inputs 2-4 are only useful for bouncing a signal back to a device which has local MIDI control turned off. I was hoping to route another device or channel, such as channel 10 out from my arranger, to an arbitrary extern, such as a drum synth. Nope, there is no way to select which master drives an extern, just which split/layer zone of master 1 is used for input. Maybe the problem is trying to do the configuration with my iPhone instead of my iPad , since the pop up help suggests holding down the arming button on the extern while tapping a master or something. I don’t understand why the MIDI setup dialog box doesn’t allow either/both of the master or extern to select the routing from a master to an extern using from & to option lists, similar to how the master input and extern output are selected.
