iPlay-Jazz Reviews

Very good

Top notch jazz musicians. Each part can be individually removed to enable you to play along no matter what instrument you play, including space for you to solo. Contrary to other review comments, the chords are provided in attached pdf. Furthermore, these are all jazz standards so you probably already know or have the chords in other apps such as iReal pro, Real Books, etc. iReal pro backs you with computer generated music whereas this app backs you with high quality human players. Great for making a recording or video of your playing with a full “real” band backing you. It doesn’t take the place of iReal Pro; it supplements it (completely different purpose and experience). I highly recommend this. I play upright bass and drums. So far I have been playing bass with it and look forward to using it on drums soon. Just slide the bass volume to zero on the app and it’s ready for my bass playing. Skill level wise, the songs range from good for intermediate players, all the way to very deep end of the pool. A couple of opportunities for improvement. The playing on several tunes is very rubato (and/or sax playing behind the beat), which is tough when you cannot make eye contact with the other players. As a bassist, I really need to see the drummer when playing rubato songs (or with behind the beat soloists). I think a play along app should avoid being highly rubato. No offense intended, as the sax playing is phenomenal, just challenging to stay with. Also, the app is buggy, though it does work well enough to enjoy. Overall, highly worthwhile for any serious jazz musician. As a minimum, there is no reason not to try the free songs. Maybe like me, you will enjoy it enough to buy the other songs for the cost of a typical CD.

This is fantastic!

This app doesn’t even work. Plus the only song u get is billies bounce, and it’s 10$ to unlock around 30 more songs. Just buy iReal pro and you have access to over 1000+ songs and it shows the CHORD PROGRESSION

Extremely disappointed...no charts/no chord progressions just audio

It’s a good idea to be able to take out various parts to a song so that you can fill that role along with a band...but before I’d ever attempt to solo over a standard, I’d want to know the chord progression! This is an omission that makes the app nearly worthless to me. It’s a case of putting the cart before the horse, because there is no horse!
