Description

Explore 3D globes of Jupiter's Galilean moons
Use pinch and finger gestures to manipulate a 3D globe of one of four of Jupiter's Galilean moons. As you zoom in more labels appear as finer detail comes into view. You can double tap on the labels to get more information about a particular feature.
Jupiter Atlas displays the approximate phase, axial tilt and central meridian of the selected moon from your chosen location and time, and renders these on the globe. You can switch to a 'Globe' mode that allows you to spin the moon around to see the whole globe. The feature database is searchable and can move the globe to a searched feature. The phase can be switched off to show the whole globe more clearly.
The moon's globe can be shown with north or south at the top or inverted to suit different telescope views.
Over 680 named features across four moons are included. These moons are Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
The phase view shows the current view of Jupiter itself including the position of the Great Red Spot and the approximate axial tilt and central meridian. You can swipe left and right on the phase view to go backwards and forwards a day. When you turn the device to landscape mode a wider view is shown with the Galilean moons in their approximate positions for the time selected.
Date, time and location can be changed. There is also a realtime mode that will update to the current time.
Atlases for the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus and Saturn are also available on the App Store!

Jupiter Atlas Reviews

Great Addition To Every Device!

Everyone can enjoy all of these atlases as works of art as well as reliable references. They are easy to use and fill the needs of astronomers of all ages. They are well worth the modest fee. It’s an investment in program improvements, and hopefully the creation of atlases for other planets.

Nice to know what's around Jupiter

It's great to see all the named places on each of the moons. If you ever update this I wonder if you could show flat maps of the moons. Still a good atlas.

A good start

It's a good start, though at $3 feels pricey relative to similar apps with regards to what it currently offers. In globe mode, you can rotate and zoom in on the several moons. Very little information beyond visual. It would make a huge difference if it tied in some useful info on the moons one is looking at. I find myself jumping out of the app often just to get some more info on what I'm viewing, e.g. safari to view wikipedia entry on the various moons. The app feels like a good start, but some awkwardness in the user interface features makes it feel unfinished. On the plus side, it doesn't crash, and can be entertaining for a short while. As a whole, it's exactly what it's called.... a jupiter moon atlas and nothing more.

Needs a Time Slider

Bozocity on

Not all astronomers have telescopes sufficiently large to reveal details of Jupiter. Far fewer are able to resolve any detail in Jupiter's tiny moons. This well crafted app allows exploring them virtually, but misses the mark of what would be truly interesting. It is not enough to be able to laboriously change the app's time and date. To earn four stars, add a time slider, so the moons could be seen orbiting the planet. This would allow planning when to view multiple transits (several moons occulting Jupiter simultaneously), interesting events well within the grasp of many scopes. The app should also include the shadows of the moons on Jupiter, requiring a magnified view. For five stars, allow the app to predict when in the future multiple transits will occur!

Lots of posibilities

Easy to navigate. It poses a big problem to its usefulness because of the small type and colors used to identify features on the maps. Zooming in does not bring the sizing of the words to a bigger and clearer view.
