Description

Kattack Mobile allows you to use your iPhone as a tracking device. You can join a race feed and have your track recorded in real time. In order for the App to record, you must first join a LIVE race which typically is set up by the event organizer. Kattack Mobile works even if there is no cell coverage. It saves the track points and uploads them when back in cell range. For more info go to kattack.com. Kattack Mobile requires version 6.1 of iOS and later.
Disclaimer: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Where’s the menu to watch the boats?

It will work if you're lucky on

Poor app. Where’s the menu to watch race? Shows my location, I know where I am, I want to see sail boats. YB race app that yet Mac Race uses much better. This one is useless

Low Features

Unable to see anything about the race you are participating in. Must use website viewer which is useless on mobile devices and difficult to use on a workstation. No fleet selection and very limited zoom. There are much better apps. Kattack was great when it was on their devices, the transition to mobile devices has not been successful.

Tracking a disaster

Used this app and the website for tracking a recent sail race (ALIR) and it is hands down the worst race tracking software and app ever seen. To first use the app, one needs to add the name of the boat then select the race. That process worked fine. However, despite being suggested that the app tracks other boats as well, that was not the case. The app tracks only one's own boat and that's it. Where the disaster unfolds is on the race website which directs people to another site listed as "good for phones". On the iPhone and the iPad, the site is completely unusable. First, it does not scale to the iPhone screen but essentially shows a PC-sized web page on the iPhone screen. Mobile sites should scale to the smart phone screen size. Second, trying to pinch in and zoom on the race for the ALIR race (either on iPhone or iPad) almost always kicked the map to alternatively, Kansas, northern Quebec, Windsor Ontario, and other remote places including in one instance Venezuela! This problem has been noted by eight friends who tried to follow the race on their mobile device. This was a constant issue noted by all who tried to follow the race. Also, although the site does show the track of the boat, one cannot replay the track(s) for post race analysis similar to Yellowbrick. Have not tried the Google Earth plug-in for PC or Mac so cannot comment on that.

Super for Kattack tracking

If your regatta or club uses Kattack for race tracking, this app does a great job of providing the Kattack server a real-time stream of your location fixes. No need to have a stand-alone GPS that you need to plug in and upload after the fact. In addition, it will create a track of your position on a map on the device. Costs a few bucks but anything that is worth something does.

Useless

This app doesn't deliver anything that I want, and causes my iPhone to crash to boot. What a waste of money, and more important, the opportunity to follow my brother's boat.

Waste of Money

An expensive app that does what the Kattack GPS trackers do for free. Doesn't even allow for live tracking of other competitors.

GREAT FOR POST RACE ANALYSIS

Our J-105 Race Team has been using this app for the last 3 Midwinter regattas. Kattack provides our tactician with important information on starting, upwind, downwind, etc. tactics. We are a new boat in the highly competitive J-105 SF Fleet #1 (San Francisco Bay) and I feel this app will help us greatly in our efforts to be the top boat in the fleet. Kattack allows you to see what the other boats are doing as far as speed, # of tacks, jibes, distance sailed, etc. Tom and the Kattack team, keep up the great work!

KATTACK ROCKS

There are few good apps for sailboat racers. Kattack is one of them. Hit the race course with your iPhone and the Kattack app and anyone can watch your race unfold live on the internet at Kattack.com. Kattack then archives the race, crunches the data and gives you a replay of the race with performance reports. All available from any computer on the internet. Rocks.
