Fun way to learn Kanji!

Catman 63 on

I've been using this app primarily in practice mode, to match the Kanji with its meaning... It is a good way to familiarize you with the characters (but I would not recommend it as a substitute for writing the characters down repeatedly). There are a few minor mistakes here and there, and sometimes the On-yomi meaning is listed first instead of the Kun-yomi... but these are minor, and I have really enjoyed using this app. Also - the Kanji resource is a great way to see each year's worth of Kanji in one sitting. Great app, I highly recommend it!

So helpful!

Fun app for learning!

This matching kanji game is fun! It reinforces the kanji you know and lets you learn new kanji. I like that it leads to a nice picture,so it feels like more of an adult learning tool, even though my younger students like playing it, too.

It's a lot of fun and addictive

A lovely and useful app. The graphics are beautiful and the game is very addictive. I've played with most of the grades and they get very hard, even when trying to write the strokes on the learning pages. I also like that you can turn the English off and focus on the Japanese readings, too. It's very good. 5 stars from me. 8 stars if I could see how I do with other people online (hint hint).

Make sure you have a current operating system installed or the app may not run. After playing with the new version I found myself learning the common kana readings (onyami and kunyomi) pretty well. There are some grades where the readings are exactly the same for different characters, so a reading may appear more than once in those games. I haven't encountered this yet, but you should be able to select a match correctly with any of two or more correct choices. The upgrade adds a new and welcome variation. I'm looking forward to the future custom User Game List, which should be helpful to students learning sets of kanji that span different grade levels.

A MUST TO LEARN JAPANESE !! GET IT !!!

I've been using this for over a year now and it's the first review I've ever written for an App that I downloaded. I usually don't say anything, but this App REALLY ROCKS! Even after a year I still go back to it and... OH YES... I'm up to grade 5 and pushing with all the other grades. AN AMAZING GAME - if you like to learn different languages or want to learn how to read and write Japanese IT'S A MUST! The part where you can write on the iPad is just ... Wow I LOVE IT! Okay, so I'm a little emotional. It's my favorite game and I find myself writing kanji on paper everyday while away from my iPad just to get better. I haven't noticed any problems with randomization like other users and I play it a lot. But, I do agree with other reviews that this game would be even better if you could match up the Japanese readings as well. Don't get me wrong, the English ones are really cool cuz they help me in 'guessing' the overall meaning with other Japanese Kanji around them! But there is so much that can be done with this App and it's super fun and challenging. As it stands, this is an AMAZING App. I hope to find more Apps like this one. I'd say that for the price with this much detail, and getting to use it everyday, it's definitely worth it!

Great idea, but....

I was in love with this App until I realized that the tile matching doesn't truly randomize throughout the grade level, and it doesn't have an option to select all grade levels to randomize. I've learned the top 16 kanji in each grade, but have never seen (even once) below that in any of the hundreds if games I've played no matter what settings I use. So if you want to only learn 16 kanji in each grade level, this is the App for you. I was looking for something that would challenge me to recognize and learn ALL the kanji in the standard Japanese schooling system, and this just does not deliver. Additionally, it would have been great if the App allowed you to match kanji to its reading along with kanji to translation matching, but if it doesn't randomize then you're stuck in the same place. Fix the randomization and my review will be updated. Add the extras and I'll tell everyone I know to get this App.

Love it!

This is a great App! A memory game is just what I needed to learn Kanji. PLUS the stroke order, and readings = AWESOME! Something I would like to see added would be: When I make a match during practice mode an audio of the most common reading would play for that Kanji. You could even put in an English audio and add an option so you can switch to Japanese or English in the settings. I definitely recommend this App.

Awesome

I really love this app. I don't use the memory game so much as I just practice writing the kanji. I just finished the first grade, first eighty kanji and I can only ask for one thing: would it be possible to update it to handle multi tasking a bit better? Whenever I am in the Practice mode, and I navigate away to check an email or something, when I go back to the app it starts me at the start screen again and I have to navigate back to whatever kanji I was practicing. This functionality would really be perfect. Even without it, still five stars.
