MindShield

Hide distractions on the web

Published by: ULRIK LYNGS

Description

Mindshield is a browser extension I built to help myself avoid being distracted online. It lets you hide distracting elements on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Google Search. For example, on YouTube you can hide recommended videos (and more), on Facebook you can hide the newsfeed and ads in the sidebar, on Twitter you can hide trends, on Google Search you can hide ads, or highlight them, etc.
You have full control over what is hidden. Simply click the extension icon in the browser toolbar to toggle distracting elements on and off, and save your preferred settings. To help hold yourself accountable, you can also add a delay time to change the settings.
Enjoy!
NOTE: the extension is open source and collects zero data. See the source code, flag bugs, or submit suggestions for improvement at https://github.com/ulyngs/mindshield-open-source

the screenshots make it look like it works for the apps themselves, but i couldn’t find a way to get it to work on anything except the web browser version which i don’t like using bc it has significant limitations in what/how you can post… not bad at what it does, but just a little misleading

Exactly what you need

So much important content (unfortunately) ends up on social media (like answers to technical questions) or arbitrated by it (like creating an account via Facebook) and so outright blocking those sites isn’t realistic any more. The solution is to gut every algorithmic element to them, every infinite feed, every story carousel so they no longer pose a threat to your time. This app succeeds where I failed with some slapped together css selectors. My only wishes would be in depth configurations for Reddit and the ability to block Twitter replies. And it’s open source, if you thought it couldn’t get any better! Maybe I’ll just make a PR with the features I want.
