If you are looking for a good Wikitonary interface so you don’t need to keep going to the mobile version of the site, then I think you will find this app is exactly what you are looking for. I had been looking for something like this for awhile, and someone recommended this to me. Super thankful to have found it. The developer also has been super friendly the times I’ve sent feedback. If you a learning a language with a lot of inflictions, such as Finnish, the one thing about the app is that it doesn’t have infliction tables loaded in (at least for Finnish). The developer told me they are working on a way to incorporate them, but that it’s a challenge because of just how many there are. Regardless, I still absolutely highly recommend the app, just know you will still have to keep a wikitonary page open in your browser for when you can’t remember how to inflict something (for now).
For starters, I downloaded this app after being sent here from the link on Wikitionary for apps that use the site. The reason for this being that I tried, and failed, to find any dictionary app on the App Store that wasn’t riddled with ads. Thus, I searched for a Wikitionary app, and found this. It’s quite good! I like being able to search up a word in a language I’m learning (like Latin or Italian) and find it instantly, all in an app! I’d definitely recommend this app to any other fellow language enthusiasts, it makes things a lot more convenient. That said, I do have a few feature suggestions: 1. When searching for words, I think it’d be good to have a way to filter them. Like, say I wanted to only find nouns, I could filter it so that the only words I see are nouns. Same thing for verbs. Though, if I’ve simply overlooked this feature, feel free to ignore this suggestion. 2. I believe I’ve seen someone else suggest this, so if it’s already there then feel free to ignore this as well, but it’d be really useful to save these words to a favorites list of sorts, maybe even have the ability to make multiple lists. That way I could find, say, the most used Italian nouns and add them to a list dedicated to Italian nouns and memorize them easier. 3. Finally, I think it’d be pretty neat to have a language suggestion feature. Using myself as an example, I noticed that there wasn’t a Biblical Hebrew dictionary, nor an Aramaic dictionary, both of which are languages that I’m learning. It’d be helpful to have such a thing, as if someone is learning a language that doesn’t have a dictionary on this app (like, say, Proto-Indo-European or something), it’d be good for them to be able to suggest their language, and potentially have it added! All that said, I wish you the best and hope you consider some of these features! I’ll definitely be using this app frequently!
Speedy, with great typography. Usually better more pleasant than using the Wiktionary site. But it would be better to have the target language dictionary in itself (e.g. french dictionary in french) in addition to the target language to english dictionary. (Maybe this exists if I switch the OS language, but even in app settings there isn’t a way to set the app language. Anyway it would be best to support both) Thanks for the app
What a beautifully designed experience with all the right incentives of that which is good. Thank you for the thoughtful and delightful work you’ve shared here for the purpose of helping others and I’m sure other decent reasons. Thanks
I am delighted that ancient Greek (and modern, too,but especially ancient) has come to Moti, but this version is still quite buggy on MacOS. It does not allow search in Greek (αλλότριος can be found using English characters as “allotrios” but not in Greek) and crashes even when searching in English. For example, I can’t search for περισπωμένως in ancient Greek, but can begin to search in English, to a point. I can search up to “peri” but Moti crashes after that. It is not clear if Moti needs or requires accents and diacritics to function. If so, its utility would be compromised, since the keyboard combinations to enter all the markings are cumbersome and time consuming, Entering approximations in English/Latin characters would be quickest, but only if the program doesn’t crash each time the search string gets to be longer that 3-4 characters. Anyway, thanks for making this available, and good luck with the bug fixes!
Does exactly what I need for reading middle English and learning German. Please add Ancient Greek!
This is a very clean and useful language reference. It has most of the features I need, but I would greatly appreciate the ability to save words to exportable lists, and I would suggest for synonyms or similar words to be displayed when the user selects a word.
This is my favorite dictionary reference to use. Would it be possible to add words to lists to remember them? You can somewhat already do that by adding a note like “fav” to a word. But then when reviewing the notes, you cannot go directly to the definition, which is somewhat inconvenient. Allow one to create different lists would be nice as well. Perhaps one would like a general list of all words, words they’ve already mastered, and a list in which they are currently working on. Doing this would also save on the unnecessary data storage in the attachments table in the SQLite database, by removing the need for a mimetype and a blob. When instead only the name of the word is needed. Please and thank you very much
As a lover of words I’ve been searching through the App Store looking for dictionary apps for years. I stumbled upon this one after looking for “wiktionary” apps. This is the best dictionary I’ve found yet—and it’s totally free and add free too! Please keep updating! Your work is appreciated!
