I read quite a lot and try to get my ebooks from Amazon alternatives, primarily bookshop dot org, whenever possible. I downloaded this ereader for those titles. I’ve been using it for about 2 years I think. The app is fine. Some of the bugs other reviews have mentioned seem to have been worked out. I always read on the black background and it works fine. The app often doesn’t remember my last page read, but I just use the bookmark feature instead. Overall, It’s definitely serviceable for the casual, occasional reader as well as folks who sometimes go through a dozen of books a month, like me. The issues I have are in the fine details… ones that unfortunately don’t measure up to the main competition. My main issue is that sometimes when I am reading on this app, the screen will automatically go dark before I finish a page (in contrast, the kindle will keep your device’s screen turned on unless you shut it off or close the app). I try to remedy that by holding a finger on the screen, but that activates a clunky magnifying feature that I can’t turn off, because it will literally follow you from page to page, without force quitting the app. So I tried making the text bigger so I spend less time on a page… but sometimes the page breaks are inaccurate at different text sizes and you lose a couple of words which really ruins the experience. There are lots of other small issues. You can’t zoom in on images. I miss the built in search and dictionary function. There are usually at least a couple of typos in each download. The text size changes when I close the app.. I have to choose a different size then go back to the one I was using to reset it. The white menus at the top and bottom of the screen pop up too easily when what I’m trying to do is turn the page. The list of little annoyances is long. They’re small issues but they add up. Reading is such an immersive, flow inducing experience that these details can really hamper the experience… like grit in your seafood. Overall, it doesn’t stop me using the app because I do so much shopping on bookshop dot org, but I keep hoping I’ll eventually see some improvements.
I can’t sign into my account
This app hasn’t been updated in a year now and it shows. It doesn’t even take up the full screen in a recent iPhone. The whole experience is awkward and unpleasant.
I also have not received a response from customer service.
Accessing books purchased from independent online stores should not be this hard. I bought the book on desktop and was instructed to download app. Could t log in to my account in app at first and had to find my own manner to access it in spite of the terrible tech support assistance in accessing my account in app. Then once I finally was able to access the purchased books, load time was slow and clunky, navigating to individual chapters doesn’t work, once a page is loaded, sometimes the next page doesn’t load. The issues aren’t limited to iOS/Apple devices either. Android devices also have the same issue and is actually worse unfortunately. If fixed, I’ll consider changing from one star rating.
I purchased an ebook through bookshop.org and they use this service . I sent them a request for help with no response.. I feel like my money was stolen from me basically and I have no access to the book .
Why would I buy books from you if I’m locked into a minimally acceptable app that doesn’t even fully support dark mode? I’m sick to death of blinding flashes when trying to turn the pages in the dark. Are there any other ways I can read the books I’ve purchased from you (on my device) than through your app? Would love to support my local bookstore, but this will need to step up! P.S. Your support screen and about screen don’t work, otherwise this would have been private feedback.
The only purchase I’ve made was an audiobook, and the first few chapters are missing. I contacted support again, after them never having responded to my first request. Don’t know if I’ll ever get my money back, so I guess I’ll have to go directly to my local bookstore to support them.
Can’t adjust brightness while using the app, so it’s always glaring. There’s no dark mode either.
