Description

Music notation is made simple with this shorthand system which puts chords into numbers 1 though 7 and streamlines the page into a simple and clean format. Forget about pencil, erasers and photocopy! This app combines technology with tried and tested methods; allowing users to create song charts with the ease and speed of pen and paper.
For over 60 years, the Nashville Number System has been the standard for musicians in live performance, recording sessions, and teaching environments. The published book has become required reading in many of the most prestigious music schools, including Belmont, ETSU, Lee and Liberty University, while also being required reading for anyone when they get their first gig in music city.
This innovative app brings the must-read instructional book by Chas Williams, with well over 50,000 copies sold, into our digital age by seamlessly allowing charts to be written on your digital device!

I’ve just started using the app and IT IS WICKED! Exactly what I have been looking for. Once you get familiar with the input section (I.e which numbers apply to chord extensions, which symbols apply to rhythm etc) you can chart stuff so fast. One thing I didn’t realise until looking in a chat thread was that you can zoom in when in the pen and pad mode (free writing with Apple Pen or your finger). This made it possible to be accurate with where the writing went :) Thanks so much for a great app chaps!

Super Useful!

Love the app and the ease of writing charts. I’ve used this a ton already and shared it amongst my bandmates who love the look of it as well. I do wanna ask if it’s possible to add parenthesis in the keyboard for chords that aren’t played in the song (a crows participation section or drum solo for example) and also a double line underneath the chords for quick passing chords. Also would love the ability to copy a chart I’ve already made so I can experiment with having two versions of the same chart, one in 2/2 and one in common for example. Wonderful app. Looking forward to using it more. Thank you so much!

Missing organization feature

Drassssssssss on

Top-notch digital app for making charts, efficiently and cleanly. Not much I would change about the chart making tool itself. However, the app is missing organizational features. User-made charts are listed alphabetically in one long list, rather than in individual files or modules such as “artist” or “genre”, which is a huge pain when searching for material on the spot. Of course, users can always export charts to their own organizational apps, but an internal filing system is surprisingly absent from this app. Hoping the developers will fix this feature in 2024! Thanks for making an awesome app for musicians in Nashville, and beyond!

Great app for charting

I’m new to the Nashville Number system and had been writing charts out by hand. Now that I have others to play with, I’m using this app to make cleaner charts and quickly send them via email. Switching to the letter names is a HUGE feature - perfect for when you have musicians not accustomed to the number system. My only feature request would be text annotations, and the ability to insert a time signature change. Definitely check this one out!

Makes Clean Charts, Fast, But Poor Storage

Drassssssssss on

As a full-time Nashville instrumentalist and arranger, this app has been handy for making easy-to-read charts using classic Nashville Number Notation, on a basic level. The interface is easy to use, mostly, especially for arrangements without too many twists and turns. Overall, this app gets the job done for basic charting. The app is almost as efficient as pen and paper, for an experienced chart-maker, but it’s not quite there, yet NNS lacks in a few ways: - Instead of offering text-based notes for written cues etc, NNS only offers freehand “drawing tool” style annotation, which appearz sloppy and difficult to make legible— easily inserted text windows would vastly improve this app. - Organized Storage is lacking here. Charts are exclusively listed alphabetically, and there is no option to make folders or lists for specific artists, venues, etc— This feature is glaringly missing, and it’s puzzling why something like this isn’t present for organizing users’ charts. I plan to continue using NNS. However, it’s no substitute for pencil & paper, the gold standard of chart making. Hopefully this app can continue to improve, because it’s very close to being truly amazing

No help in app

Jimtowner on

I have a basic understanding of the NNS but the app is usable because the help sparse. I guess it’s supposed to be intuitive but it’s not intuitive for someone like me who’s not totally steeped in NNS. It needs a thorough user guide.
