Nitro Photo Reviews

Extremely well written app by a caring developer

Absolutely fantastic app! I’m recently retired but spent decades as a software developer, then manager, then CTO and its rare that I get a new bit of software and find myself as impressed as I did when I discovered Nitro. Not just the features, but the care around seamless Apple Photos integration and the overall user experience. That this wasn't the result of a large team of coders is all that more impressive! Or maybe the reason its so great is that it *wasn't* a large team of coders :) Nitro has become my primary tool for managing my Photos library and I look forward to watching this app evolve. The fact that I can hop between Apple Photos and Nitro with impunity and all of my rating and flagging maintained across all platforms is quite extraordinary. Kudos to Gentlemen Coders! Also worth mentioning: I submitted a feature request and got an immediate and thoughtful response from the developer.

A wee learning curve, but excellent.

Delighted with the app. It renders photos instantly, which is a huge plus. Initially I was a tad intimidated by the number of options, but the videos are very clear. Its other great plus is that it is easily configurable, so you can put the crucial stuff at the top in line with the workflow. Using the Photos library to store and display the pics also makes things easier. I don’t like to over edit photos to the point that they look false, and the lovely thing about Nitro is it is also very subtle.

Raw Power / but better

I’ve been a longtime Raw Power user (same developer). Nitro picks up and improves on Raw Power. I am very pleased with the way it works. It’s a simple and effective tool for Raw editing on the Mac and iOS.

Quality of Life Improvements as Well

I typically Auto Enhance photos in Photos app and call it good. Recently I wanted to export all my processed photos as TIF’s (“developed”) and Apple Photos hanged somewhere. Nitro gave me the option for 1200 dpi 16-bit TIFF’s and managed to export everything to disk.Nitro seems to be a better media hub.

Stealth Greatness

This gets little attention on YouTube, and the developer is a single guy rather than a big staff like Photomator probably has or even Darkroom, and yet this app produces some powerful results. I have a theory why — Nitro exposes more controls to the underlying Apple Raw engine than any other app I’ve seen. If all you tinker with is what you’re familiar with from, say, Lightroom, then you might get somewhat flat results from just highlights, shadows, etc. But hiding under ‘Enhance’ is the Deepen and Lighten sliders, which produce very good results. To draw some direct comparisons, I think the results from RAW files are superior to On1. It’s possible to get better results from DxO PhotoLab but only after a much steeper learning curve and then they want to sell you super expensive add ons just to get the ability to have a radial mask and other basic tools available in everyone elses tools. Despite years of experience in Lightroom Classic I find it a little easier to get good, subtle results from Nitro, though in some more challenging situations LrC is easier — possibly due to RAW engines, but possibly due to my lack of understanding of Nitro. I’ll admit, I wish the masking was bit better, AI denoise is in the works as is an AI remove tool and those will help. But considering this is one guy, it’s amazing. Very much considering abandoning Lightroom and just going all-in on Photos/Nitro.

A true Mac app

Nitro looks like a Mac app, feels like a Mac app and just works like a Mac app should. Intuitive, familiar and easy to pick up.

Simple amazing app

I have been using this original application until it was moved to Nitro, love the additional features and the simplicity of the application and tools. Adding additional LUTS for my Leica Q2. The ability to natively work with iCloud Photos makes this a great application to work in one unified environment. Finally you have questions, ask, you will be replied too by the developer.

Great photo processor to work with

I have bween using Nitro for several months after seeing it in action a a Mac Users Group meeting. I has a lot more options than the standard Apple photos app.

One of the best

Only thing missing is focus and exposure stacking abilities.

Thank you for this awesome app!

Thank you for creating Nitro! I have been looking for a Lightroom alternative for a long time. I also really like that it is so integrated in the photos app. The fact that it works smoothly on iPad is incredible. I am looking forward to using it on my Mac as well.
