Phonics Hero: Learn to Read

Used by my sons school in prep! Amazing app

As a psychologist working in the literacy space, this is my new favourite app! My clients with a wide range of skill levels are enjoying it and learning from it. I get very analytical about how well apps align with the science of literacy and the science of learning, and Phonics Hero comes up tops! Some of the many things I love about it: Very clear voice in a choice of accents - which is essential for understanding how spellings map to the sounds in the spoken word Fun and varied games, with a story format and rewards, without causing sensory overload Neutral feedback for errors (not rewarding or demoralising) and fun/ funny consequences for correct answers Clear data for teachers/ parents and ability to choose levels and activities to ensure mastery learning Wonderful customer support The best prompting system I've seen in an app, moving from least-to-most prompting and using evidence-based strategies like continuous blending (stretching words), segmenting (sounding out) and visual cues for a great spelling routine. Uses nonsense words in the placement test and in each level to check children are truly decoding Does an excellent job of isolating the target knowledge/ skill: there are always very similar options to the correct answer so the child needs to pay attention to each written word and the sequence of letter-sounds/ graphemes Graduated progression of spelling skills within and across levels, including moving from choosing letter teams like "sh" or "ow" (although not always representing single phonemes - depending on the scope and sequence you choose) to typing on a querty keyboard A good approach to high frequency words ("tricky words" that are not yet decodable), where the child first spells the more regular parts of the word, then later the less regular/ tricky bit Minimises frustration - always helps the child to achieve a task quickly before they move on Includes careful attention to vocabulary, automaticity and comprehension of decodable sentences and stories An app can't do it all, and I can think of a few slight flaws here and there, but this is likely to be the best way to supplement quality teaching that you'll find!

My son and daughter both use for school and love doing more than their homework, I’m loving that they want to learn. Had one issue with one login after an update however I emailed customer support and they quickly resolved this for us, thank you.

My son dose not know how to improve on his reading and when l found this app he instantly started on playing the game and l see that how he is learning to read thanks so much

This is great for my child but the keyboard is really bad and annoying.

I’m 7 and I have to do it for school and I hate it

Worst learning app I have used. My daughter hated it. It logged her out numerous times and didn’t save her progress so she had to go all the way back to the start and start over. It lacked instructions and if she didn’t hear a word the first time there was no option for her to listen to it again and she had to go all the way back to the start once again. My poor daughter was upset that she spent 3 hours just trying to complete the placement test because she was sent back to the start over and over again because it wouldn’t save her progress and kept logging her out

I love the game it is the best when I got it after I signed in it had stuff that I had completed from school ❤️😍😍😁

the lessons are to long 😡😡😡😡😡
