Description

The PIZZEY AND KNIGHT BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA Digital Edition for iPhone and iPad is a comprehensive and interactive application that combines images and sounds on over 980 Australian bird species with seven interactive modules for every aspect of mobile birding. A slide menu facilitates easy navigation between all modules.
The app can be used as a FIELD GUIDE (like the book) or as a BIRD LIST, with essential functions such as view bird page, distribution map or text, play the sound, add to your list, and view similar birds available directly in both.
The FIELD GUIDE displays the full field guide (family) pages of the book. You can browse the pages, select from the family list, or search for a specific species in the bird list. Selecting a bird links to the full functions toolbar.
The BIRD GUIDE includes a full bird list and links to individual BIRD PAGES for over 980 species, with illustrations, species text, colour-coded distribution maps, photographs and sounds. Selecting a bird in the list opens the full functions toolbar. Optional settings for the BIRD LIST include regional lists, alphabetical or taxonomic sort order, text and thumbnail size, and bird names in 10 languages including English, Scientific, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Potuguese, Spanish, Swedish.
SIMILAR BIRDS loads a list of birds for comparison and identification.
COMPARE BIRDS displays the bird pages side by side for direct comparison.
IDENTIFICATION uses location, habitat, bird shapes and plumage to shortlist possible species for identification, or viewing with the Compare Birds function.
MY LOCATION is an interactive map for generating bird lists and locating birding sites near you. You can use current location or drop a pin for a new location with GPS co-ords and bird list. Birding sites are displayed with links to a list and site description.
MY LISTS is a personal list manager that includes a life list and sub-lists that report to your life list. Sighting details include place, date, GPS co-ords, and sighting notes. You can sync your lists to iCloud for backup, and also sync to linked devices. The SIGHTINGS SUMMARY for a selected species displays a list of sightings or sighting localities on a map.
BIRDING SITES includes descriptions and photos of over 270 birding sites from around Australia, with functions for a bird list and ‘show on map’.
MY PHOTOS links your personal bird photos to your sightings and lists, displays thumbnails on the bird pages and links to a photo viewer.
The MULTIMEDIA DATA includes • over 250 field-guide pages • over 980 individual bird pages • all the ‘new’ bird species and names • over 2500 illustrations, 4000 photos, and 1500 bird sounds • colour-coded distribution maps • seasonal status bar • endemic and red data species • rare bird maps.
# This app can be used in the bush and remote locations. It does NOT require a wifi, phone or internet connection to operate.

Pizzey and Knight Birds of Aus Reviews

The go-to for Australian birds.

Dr B Sherman on

Australia

Easy to use digital version complements and improves on my 1984 copy of the hardback Field Guide. Minus 2 stars because I can’t share it with my wife using Family Sharing even though the App store says Family Sharing is supported

Great app just one suggestion

NPOBL on

Australia

I really like the app, think the combo of pics and drawings is perfect. The compare feature is fantastic. The only recommendation I would have would be to split the different taxonomic groups with some sort of bar or separation (perhaps like the Morcombe app) making it easier to locate the bird faster and less confronting than a whole list of birds with no separation between groups. Other than that, my go to app after using Morcombe for years.

Calls

Gazmo84 on

Australia

Rather disappointed that an app for 50 bucks doesn’t even have a call for common spices such as wedge tailed eagle

Don’t leave on holiday without it

Jaytee61 on

Australia

This was a present for my birthday and it exceeded my expectations. On holiday now in Qld where there are so many birds we don’t get in Victoria. Bird call feature sorts out the confusion of similar looking birds and the list feature tracks all the ones I’ve spotted. For me, as a medium range bird nerd it’s perfect

Great app

eariam1 on

Australia

Easy to use….but sometimes I have seen or know that a bird is in a location but doesn’t show on the list of possible birds. For instance in Port Macquarie/Lake Cathie you will see Regent and Satin bowerbirds along with King parrots but they do not appear on the list!?!

Kingfishers

Bessoinoz on

Australia

Of the 10 odd Kingfishers that are in Australia only 4 are listed

Excellent app

DanJ100 on

Wasn’t keen on this earlier as it didn’t look great, but recent updates made me bite the bullet and purchase it. I’m very impressed. Quite complex so it takes a bit of getting used to but heaps of great information along with bird call audio and physical appearance comparisons. And I keep finding different ways to view species details (via the Field Guide like in the books, and via the Bird Guide section) which is very helpful. I also like picking a location and then scrolling through the list of possible species for the area. Really enjoying this app!

Good app, but family sharing stopped working.

Yabbietol on

Australia

All of a sudden stopped been family shared with my wife who has been using it with me for years. Did all the fault finding from Apple, other apps family shared, but this our most expensive app and do not feel like paying for it twice.

Improvements required

randy_lewis on

Australia

State filter highly inaccurate. Many birds listed under Tasmania that don’t occur. Bit of a pain having to exit from a bird to hear its calls. Great that real photos are used

Months of Year : Confusing

David W Berry on

Australia

First month of year: July Last month of year: June Please fix this; it’s awfully confusing when checking migratory birds.
