Description

This award-winning app is the one to get if you are passionate about your child learning to read, and your child is aged between 4 and 6, or older but needs some extra help with reading.
It teaches phonics and handwriting (including joined up). It has a first set of storybooks for them to read, written specifically for children learning to read using the app.
Your child will prefer our books to paper books, because they help them read - if they get stuck, they tap a word to get help sounding it out. You will prefer our books, because the quizzes check they can read the words and understand them.
The books get progressively harder, but kids don’t realise because they are getting better at reading all the time.
Our apps are used in hundreds of American elementary schools. One of only nine education apps awarded the top A+ rating by Balefire Labs.
The app is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Children master these skills:
* writing letters
* recognising 72 letter sounds (e.g. ‘ch’ are the letters that make the initial sound in ‘chat’)
* blending letter sounds together to make words (e.g ‘ch-a-t’)
* hearing a word and selecting its written form (e.g. the app says, “chat”, the child has to select ‘chat’ from a group of words - some of which are similar to chat)
How it works

PocketPhonics Stories Reviews

Excellent App to teach/reinforce reading skills

alliwes on

I cannot say enough good things about this app. It has helped all three of my boys on their reading journeys. My youngest son is currently using it now. He is in first grade and struggling with phonics at school. Since having him practice and play on this app, he is now steadily progressing! The best part is that he doesn’t feel like he is doing “work” — just having fun. I cannot imagine a scenario where one would regret purchasing this app. It’s great!

(See title) - my toddler is supposed to be intrigued by this?

Needs a part 2

We love it. But we have finished it now ready for a part 2 or higher level. Do you have anything like that?

Written instructions for people who can’t read

D787632 on

United States

The app relies on displaying written instructions like “When I say a sound, tap the letter”. These instructions aren’t said out loud. But the whole point of the app is the user is learning to read. When you can’t read it is confusing and surreal for the iPad to just start hissing at you. My 3 year old had no idea he was supposed to push the ‘s’ button when that happened

Great program for helping kids read!

R1chieR1ch on

My five-year old son loves reading with this program. Fun and appropriate graphics and sound effects. We started when he was four. Be warned, though, that we always sat next to him to use this as a reading aid, *not* as a reading teacher. It works great when you get tired of reading the same word over and over to your child. The app never loses its patience! And more than the weekly emailed progress reports, watching your child read things all around him (like cereal boxes) makes it all the more rewarding. Give it a try! And make sure you set "Guided access" on (search for that in your Settings panel for your iPad) so your child doesn't end up in Angry Birds when he should be reading!

A great app

This app has worked wonders for my youngest. He is about to turn 6 and has been struggling with reading for a little while. We have been using the app for only one week and his word recognition and sounding has improved so much. He works on a couple of activities a day and loves it. Thank you to the developers for making this incredible app.

Amazing App

My youngest age 7 has just started back at school and I want to help give her a boost in her reading. Being the eldest in her class I feel she should be more advanced than the rest and noticed her struggling with the sounds. Most likely down to me not knowing how to use phonics correctly as the school never had a parents class to teach us. Through reading the info along with this app I understand it all so much better and my daughter has actually surprised me as to how much she already knows. Through reading the info I have found that her school is one of many that use books that don't focus on sounds she has learnt through phonics as the funding using in place to buy the proper books. Something I will look into through the PTFA. This app not only give the the proper words for sounds they learn but gets them tracing and saying the new sounds as they go along and she has so much fun answering the questions to word sounds correctly, any she gets wrong she is eager to correct. I’m on my 7 day free trail atm but once it’s up I will purchase for the year as it will be well worth the money as it has already got her confidence up. Thank you so much for this app I will recommend to other adults at my children’s school. Xx

I love this app, my daughter has special needs and I can’t believe the progress she has made since using this app. She is seven and works at level 2-3 well since we started using this app just over a week ago she is reading sentences and ever did good on a spelling test I did with her.

Great app

My daughter and I do this app, she learns and the coin/certificate collecting can be great motivation when she’s not really in the mood...

Brilliant app

An excellent app at an affordable price. It’s really helping my reception aged son to carry on his reading while the schools are closed. He loves to do the tests at the end of each book and get his certificates. The app is set up very clearly and the sounding out of the words good.
