Jerky and Missing Data
I was hopeful about this app, because it sources weather radar data from MetService. Sadly, I was very disappointed. I even paid for a month’s subscription to see if that helped with some of the issues. (1) The weather radar display is very jerky, with blanking between frames, and doesn’t seem to show imagery at 7.5 minute intervals as available from MetService. (2) By default, the display goes forward an hour from the current time to display extrapolated radar imagery. This seems to work elsewhere in the world (including Australia) but not over NZ, so you sit there and watch an hour of blankness before the animation resumes with past radar. There does not seem to be an option to turn this off. (3) For most parts of the world, but not the longitudes of NZ, most of Australia, Japan, etc., there is animated satellite imagery. It cuts off west of 180E (or 180W). When I contacted the developers they said this was a problem with Apple maps, but it also looks like they are not using imagery from the Japanese Himawari satellite. (4) The weather forecast temperatures look wrong to me, compared with other sources ... not enough diurnal variation. (5) It’s raining outside right now, and there is rain on the radar, but the forecast cheerily told me no rain was expected for the next hour, probably because of a lack of radar extrapolation for NZ. So I’ve cancelled my subscription. Maybe, if the developer can fix all these faults, I might consider it again.
