Operating a drone for non-hobby operations requires a Remote Pilot Certificate. You must successfully complete the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Knowledge Exam to earn a Remote Pilot Certificate with a Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) rating.
Bundled with an wealth of resources including the Small UAS Study Guide and the Remote Pilot Knowledge test Guide, Sporty's Drone Study Buddy will prepare you for the Remote Pilot FAA written test like no other study tool available.
After reviewing the study material you can then study the test questions with three modes of operation. Test material is expertly organized into categories based on subject matter and includes, questions, answers, correct answers, and detailed explanations.
• STUDY QUESTIONS BY TOPIC •
Learning Mode allows you to create custom review sessions by selecting exactly which categories you want to review. Each session randomly generates the question order, and provides instant feedback based on your answer selection. Each question also provides a detailed description as to why each answer is right. These explanations were developed by Sporty’s team of Master Instructor’s, based on their experience preparing for the Remote Pilot certificate.
• REVIEW QUESTION FLASHCARDS •
Flashcard mode tests your knowledge by allowing you to only see the question without the answer choices. After answering the question mentally, you can then select to show the correct answer, and self-grade your progress along the way. This is a great feature that keeps you from being distracted by incorrect answers.
• TAKE PRACTICE TESTS •
Test mode randomly generates a 60-question session from the entire database of published FAA test questions, simulating the real Remote Pilot test. After answering all the questions, you’ll be given instant results, and have the option to review either all the questions, or just missed questions. Included in the review session are the same detailed explanations for why each answer is correct.
• PROGRESS REPORTS •
After completing each test your results are saved in the app's Progress Report section, where you can review previous scores and and a detailed history of each question and answer selection. You can also pause a partially-completed session, and resume it at a later time here.
• REMOTE PILOT STUDY RESOURCES •
To help you prepare for the knowledge areas covered on the Remote Pilot knowledge test we've included the following resources in the app:
- Remote Pilot - Small UAS Study Guide
- Remote Pilot - Smal UAS Airman Certification Standards
- FAR Part 107 Advisory Circular

While taking the real test, I was feeling angry that none of the questions were exactly what I had seen in this app. I was expecting a situation like the ham radio exam prep apps where the actual test questions are public. I later found out that in FAA exams, the current test questions bank is not in the public domain.
I got all 60 questions correct, so obviously the app did a great job of preparing me (I didn’t use any other resources). I used it for about 5 hours of total study, mostly in exam mode. YMMV; I had taken the private pilot exam about 15 years ago, so if you’re coming with less background, expect to spend a little more time.
Not helpful
This may be better suited for computer. Not an app
I’m going to crush the test.
This is the perfect combination of value and sUAS study help in a handy app format. Learning mode gives you explanations of why each answer is right or wrong and keeps track of the ones you miss making it easy to ID weaknesses. With this, combined with my paper copy of Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, I’m confident I can pass the test first try, no questions.
Recurrent test questions
Good app. It would be nice to add learning mode section for recurrent test takers. Questions are obviously different from the initial test takers.
I’ll change my stars to 5 when that happens.
A wonderful too to help pass your test
This app really helped me pass the 107 test in addition to a course on Lynda.com and a pilot friend to clear up confusing concepts...
This prog is wonderfully set up to drill yourself on any possible questions that will be on the test… You always wonder if the questions you are studying will be on the actual test - in this case the specific details are changed, but the format of the questions are all covered…. There were no surprises when I took the test…
Oh and for the record I passed first try… It’s not an easy test to take without studying.
Great study aid for on the go
Great app for getting right into material or practice tests. Each question gives you an explanation in the answers and a reference on where to find more. After purchasing and taking all the practice questions I felt confident enough to schedule my exam. Great app! Love the zoom feature.
Great app, helped me pass my test
I got this app a few weeks before I took my part 107 remote pilot test, which I passed with an 82%. I used this app, some free practice tests online, and a few YouTube videos. I probably spent around 20 hours total studying. This is the only app I paid for, and I think it was worth it. On this app, I mostly used the practice tests. There were a lot of questions on the test that were very similar to the ones in the practice tests in the app. When taking a practice test, I like that you get the answers to the questions, as well as an explanation. I also liked the materials provided for study- however, my eyes could not read most of the documents for very long on an iPhone.
Keeps getting better
This was a huge help for me when I was studying and I am sure when recert time comes it will once again be my go to.
Only study tool I needed!
I was looking to get my FAA license which already costs 150 to take the test and I saw courses at hundreds of dollars alone. I took my chances on this 20 dollar app and it taught me everything I needed to know! There are some questions that I wasn’t able to fully comprehend at first but for those I was able to find detailed explanation videos on YouTube. I would highly recommend this app to anyone looking to get their FAA Part 107 license but doesn’t want to spend hundreds on a training course.
2.0
Well done !! Excellent upgrade, I love the flash cards.
