Return to Monkey Island is an unexpected, thrilling return of series creator Ron Gilbert that continues the story of the legendary adventure games The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.
It’s been many years since Guybrush Threepwood was last locked in a battle of wits with his nemesis, the zombie pirate LeChuck. His true love, Elaine Marley, has turned her focus away from governing and Guybrush himself is adrift and unfulfilled, having never found the Secret of Monkey Island. Hip, young pirate leaders led by Captain Madison have shuffled the old guard from power, Melee Island has taken a turn for the worse, and famed businessman Stan has been imprisoned for ‘marketing-related crimes’.
Banter with old friends and new faces on familiar islands now under dangerous new leadership. Then, take to the high seas and explore the new and unknown as you work your way out of tough predicaments. Clever puzzles, bizarre situations, and devastating ripostes are all that stand between Guybrush and glory.
Return to Point & Click Swashbuckling
Bringing classic point and click gameplay to the modern-day, intrepid pirates will solve puzzles and explore the islands with a clever evolution of classic adventure game controls. Context-sensitive interactions, reactive dialog trees, and an easy-to-use inventory system make pirating a breeze.
Embark on Archipelago Adventures
Navigate the sometimes-friendly confines of Melee Island, a familiar place that finds itself under new management by leaders who have put the squeeze on old friends and new faces. Venture out into uncharted lands like the aptly named Terror Island and the chilling outposts of Brrr Muda to make allies and enemies alike.
Created by a Legendary Crew
The new chapter in the Monkey Island series marks the return of the iconic series’ creator Ron Gilbert, joined by game co-writer Dave Grossman, art director Rex Crowle (Knights & Bikes, Tearaway) and composers Peter McConnell, Michael Land, and Clint Bajakian (Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge).

Restore option?
Edit2: Three months later and still no fix for the restore option. Meanwhile it now shows up in Apple Arcade for subscribers to play while purchased owners get nothing if they need to restore it on a new device. Perfect way to do business and keep paying customers engaged.
Edit: One month later, where is the fix for the restore of past purchases? Is it too late to ask for a refund? Where is the restore option for those of us that purchased the game before it became free to try? Still waiting….

Try-before-you buy! FASLE INFORMATION
That is what they claim. The company is disgraceful but even
worse Apple is too ignorant to stop the abuse & lies. They will
promote it as Try-before-you-buy but Apple appears to be
more concerned about doubling profits if you buy it again.
This company has refused to offer a restore option and that
is an intentional act of deceiving the customer.
The product is Try it, pay to use it once!
That makes it rent the app not buy it.
So. Much. Dialog.
I only made it 10 minutes before deleting the game because I don’t have the patience to sit through that much dialogue. Even skipping the dialogue took forever and requires multiple swipes. The graphics were amazing, so if you like games with heavy dialogue, you may enjoy this. I just can’t do it.
Great adaptation for iOS
Point-and-click adventures have always been a bit hit-or-miss on console/mobile depending on how much effort the devs put into changing up the controls, so I was a little worried about how this would play on iPad.
Very pleasantly surprised as to the result, and I kind of hope that other point-and-click games in the future take note. Everything is very smooth and streamlined, and I didn't come across any of the technical issues noted in older comments, so hopefully those have been fixed.
Story-wise, it's classic Monkey Island, with familiar music and top-notch voice-acting. Blasts from the past don't always live up to your memories, but this one did, at least for me.

Wonderful and Nostalgic
I played on hard mode and it was wonderful. Everything you love about Monkey Island with some fresh twists. Familiar locations and characters along with some new ones. Lots of fun references to earlier inventory items, challenges, and storyline. It will definitely be a better experience for folks that have played the original games. People complaining about the ending don’t get the reference. It’s actually genius. The graphics and audio are great and the puzzles are the right level of challenging. I never pay this much for apps but, well, it’s Monkey Island!
Stupid ending
The gameplay was great and all, but the ending is so abrupt and completely unsatisfying 🫤
Nostalgic Entertainment
Loved the original DOS games as a kid & this is an enjoyable adaptation. I especially enjoyed the lore behind "Jon Laney" who was known for impersonating all kinds of monsters & creatures, which is clearly a fantastic nod to the wonderful acting & makeup skills of Lon Chaney Sr.
I am trying to play but there’s no sound 😔
No sound/dialogue at all
Promising re-visit
In the scenes with all the kids, it was at first worrisome for older fans that they MI they remember is a kid game now, but then you’re Guybrush again and it all satisfies. I am at the part having the map to the mop and a hint refers to place that I can’t find; I wish it were clearer whether this is the point at which you have to buy the game before proceeding or if I missed something, it would be nice of the devs to make it clearer.
