I tried mirroring to my Apple TV and now The sound on the game only works when I connect AirPods. I’ve deleted the game, restarted my phone and nothing works. Can only be played with headphones now. Never had a chance to even start my first game. 0/5 do not recommend.
Edit: The sound issue is caused by the iPhone being on silent mode. This is not a bug with the developer, but rather a feature, according to Apple’s technical literature regarding silent mode on the iPhone 14 Plus. I have changed my rating to a 5, because the app is actually amazing after resolving the sound issue. If you are experiencing no sound on while using this application on iOS, be sure to check that your sound is not on silent.
Cross platform works great
A nice implementation; works great on mobile; cross platform seems to work seamlessly.
Digital Boardgame Done Right
It’s hard to imagine a better digital version of a board game than this one. it’s a great way to learn the game and can be played quickly in this format. I’m playing on iPad and controls and screen size is perfect.
Small Bugs, but still good
Worth the cost to buy it, but playing multiplayer, my friends and I have had plenty of instances where one of us is frozen. So they then need to leave the game and re-join.
When you re-join a game, it shows you the last few turns that you missed, and this feels like such a waste of time, watching an unskippable cutscene of turns that you’ve already watched.
If they could just add a “skip recap” button that would be great.
Also, not freezing during online play would be nice.
Unreadable
I’m sure this is a great game, and I really want to learn it. Unfortunately, this app is pretty worthless for me since the text size is absolutely microscopic without any way to increase it. It’s a shame since there’s plenty of screen real estate that could be used.
Edit 6/24: the devs reached out rather quickly following this review to offer a series of nonsensical, unhelpful comments. Minus one more star.
It’s ok.
Why can’t I check the board after the game is over? Often times there’s a win and I’m confused about how the opponent one. It happens so fast. Also, I feel like the tutorial missed some important points. I had to watch a YouTube video on how to play after the tutorial.
Great game app — just one grievance
Played this one time after a few tabletop games of ROOT. The app is really great in most ways, brilliantly done and offers a nice experience for users. Artwork, music, sound effects, and navigation are all super pleasant and aesthetically on point.
One grievance: Per the Law of ROOT, when the Eyrie enter Turmoil, they depose their current leader and *choose* their new leader, however the app chose for me when I played the Eyrie and went through Turmoil once during the game. It’s a major strategy point for the Eyrie to be able to choose their new leader because of the leader’s special ability as well as the correlating placement of the loyal viziers.
Fantastic port except…
Add a “fast forward through opponents’ turns” option. Having to rewatch three opponents for each turn is a pain. Other than that small adjustment…amazing!
This game rocks!!
The digital version is highly recommended if you play the board game. The tutorials are great although some extra research will likely be needed to fully understand some of the rules. I’m totally hooked on this game. Also the animations are fun. Great work!
Oo-De-Lally!
The life and personality of Kyle Ferrin’s art of the Woodland’s anthropomorphic inhabitants is continued in the visuals and audio of this electronic adaptation, and mercifully for me, the computer remembers the rules for me, gives me tutorials and challenges, and offers a rulebook to check mid-game.
There are times when an action on my turn causes the time of day to roll forward, and I cannot undo my last action, even when nothing was randomized. It would be handy to be able to do so.
Aside from that, the touch controls work well, and I love the continued support in the form of expansions such as the Riverfolk and the Underworld. I look forward to further adventures in the woodlands.
