Scan Your Boxes allows you to view the contents of your cartons, storage boxes, folders, etc. in a simple scan of QR Code.
You will no longer need to take out your boxes, open them, search them, to realize that the treasure you are looking for is not there and put everything away.
The scan of a simple QR Code will allow you to do your research without getting your hands dirty.
With Scan Your Boxes, 3 steps are enough:
1. take a picture of the items in your boxes
2. the app provides you a QR Code which you can print and paste it on your carton
3. scan the QR Code to view the contents of the application
You can share your boxes through a monthly subscription for 5 or 10 persons.
Only the owner of the boxes needs to pay for the monthly subscription. It’s free for people you are sharing with.
The subscription is needed to pay for the secure cloud (terms of use: https://alienfamily.github.io/scanyourboxes/syb_terms_of_use.html).

I have a lot of boxes personally and professionally I need to organize and have spent a lot of time searching for the right app, box type, labeling system for personal and professional organization.
Personally I am using clear totes with lids along with this app and 8 1/2 x 11 two labels per sheet self-adhesive shipping labels for boxes for printing the QR codes.
Professionally, I’m using the nestable heavy duty boxes.
My only issue with this app so far is that there is a limit on the characters in the description for items that does not allow you to easily cut and paste
The other issue is not being able to customize The QR label generation.
The labels are generated vertically not horizontally and don’t know or have not found a way to change this. Would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone or the developer. Once I troubleshoot this, I would be happy to share my system with anyone who is interested as it is by far the most convenient and economical way to go especially when dealing with organization due to death in the family.
Simple yet incredibly powerful
After trying so many storage apps I have to say this is a “Diamond in the rough”! Ability to print the QR codes with label and category (with multiple per sheet for the sides a tops of my containers (storage bins in my case). And ability to backup to iCloud, export csv AND print pdf of my entire inventory (with pics if you so choose). In a future release I would love to put pic of my container as thumbnail (currently it’s my first pic, which you can sort to top in place of thumbnail) and add cabinet, drawer (or allow us rename) as a icon/label for each box (I am printing these “box” QR codes for my cabinet doors, so I can list their contents as well. As is, the app is very flexible! I am getting creative with it LOL
Constant errors and we recognition issues
QR code, when scanned from within their own app, produces “error”: the QR code is not recognized That’s stupid when you’ve just created the QR code. Scanning with another QR scanner app gives what appears to be a partial web address that takes you nowhere. I personally don’t have time to go figure out his to correct this crap immediately after purchasing. I’m asking for my money back.
In addition to this, evidently if you want resolution you have to sign up with github. NO NO NO
Box descriptive text needs to fit in the allotted space
I have been using this app to organize my home moving. It’s useful. I find it annoying that the text field for describing the box does not 1) put line breaks at logical points (rectangula-r) 2) left justify text 3) flow text off the label boundaries especially when all the text would fit were it left justified.
The text field for “in:” and “contains:” are left justified so it is jarring that the first line of text is not.
Additional Features
I want to start off by saying this is the first app that has felt easy to use for doing this sort of inventory thing. It’s super easy to add objects and move them between boxes, but there are a few interface things that could be added in my opinion. First would be a way to sort the boxes alphabetically. My naming system wasn’t fully established when I made the first box and now it’s hard to tell what the next box in my sequence is. Second would be including the description in the search function. I’ve added keywords in the description so I have a better chance of searching for and finding something later. And finally, allowing the search to lookup individual words instead of complete search terms. For example if I have “Cable, 3’” as an item title, it would be convenient if I searched “3’ cable” that the item would show up. I don’t know if there is a simple way to do this, but I think it would help the recall function of the app. Overall I think it’s good, but want some more small features to make it even better.
Love this app!
I have a big move coming up. This app is allowing me to inventory everything before I put it away in boxes and it has been a huge help. I love that if I want to find something, I just search any word and all items with the name pop up immediately with its image and location. There are still some other features I’d like, like a better sharing service between multiple devices/users so someone else that I allow can scan my box and see what’s in it, but the developer is working on it. The developer has been super responsive on GitHub and I have been incredibly impressed. I also appreciate how the data is kept on your device, so your stuff isn’t public. I think that’s what makes that sharing feature difficult to add on. Looking forward to seeing where this app goes.
Good concept
I like the QR code concept and that it helps me keep track of what’s in a box and where the box is, but the photo feature does not seem to be working for me. I’ve tried taking photos with the camera and assigning photos that I’ve already taken, and neither is working. It’s just giving me a greyed out icon.
Great App, It Could Improve
This app has been really good to me. I have several boxes in multiple locations and it does the job really well for the money (compared to other, subscription-based apps I’ve used.
I have been heavily using it now and can recommend a few updates that I would not mind paying for, and it would probably help earn that 5th star...
Individual item information:
The box name where the item is located is only displayed in the search results (list view). When you open the item, the box where it’s stored is not displayed anywhere. It would be great if it displayed the box name, box location and box category when viewing the item.
Individual item sharing.
It would be really awesome if the individual items could be shared with their name, picture, box name, box location and box category (like a snapshot) so you can send it to someone looking for the item on your behalf.
QR, Label Printing:
It would be amazing if the label can be printed to label sizes (like 4x6) and not an entire 8.5x11 page, so they can be printed directly to photo printers with 4x6 self-adhesive labels. The only way I was able to achieve this, was by doing a print screen and then cropping the image to 4x6. This would be a great improvement!
iOS Light vs. Dark Mode
When editing items, the “Give an annotation if you want” text box looks good when using iOS in “Light” mode. However, when using “Dark” mode, the black text can sometimes be a bit difficult to read over the dark background. Additionally, the text box is the same color of the background. It would be great if it’s not transparent, so it leverages the iOS color scheme and it becomes clear that it’s meant for user input.
Swipe pictures between boxes
Is there a way to swipe between ALL the pictures?
Currently you have to go to a box, look at pictures, then select another box and look st those pictures then select another box ...
Is there s way to just swipe through ALL the photos, and then select the box?
Great app, easy to use.
Only question is where are all the photos stored? If I were to update my phone will all the stored boxes still exist?
Thanks!
