Not enough reviews to make a reliable assessment. The app needs more user feedback.
I should not have to pay monthly to be able to speak.
I go nonverbal a lot and i use apps and other tools to help me communicate my needs. Wi the this app however i have to pay monthly just to do so, and when i tried the free trial you only get a couple words (not nearly enough to express any feelings). I feel they are profiting off of people’s disabilities which j find very ableist in a way. Sure other people use it for different reasons but i feel like it should be more accessible to people like me.
Incredible and underrated
This app “clicked” right from the start. Was hesitant to trial this. No one talks about this app like proloquo2go or lamp gets talk. Proloquo2go was frustrating to say the least, folders within folders within folders led to frustration. I underestimated this app. I was wrong. Within days, with a little to no practice it could be used to communicate so much faster and easier than a year of proloquo2go practice could do. It’s a genius setup and an extensive vocabulary. Thank you so much for making this app. It’s amazing. It makes sense. I think it’s so underrated compared to other well known programs. Everything is well placed. Everything is easy to navigate to. We are seriously considering getting this app after the trial is over if we can afford it. A few user feedbacks though, perhaps it would be beneficial for there to be a way to “turn on” a color scheme like the Fitzgerald for example. It would help a lot of people with organization and as well as vision impairments. It is also very familiar to some. Another thing that could be done is make the symbols outlines thicker like in the pecs or symbolstix for example. If not perhaps an option to change the symbols to a different type. This could also help a lot of people with vision impairments since the grid cannot be adjusted. Another thing I came up with is that, perhaps, since the grid should not be adjusted for the motor plan, there could be a mode for motor issues where the grid is cut directly in half placed in two screens. Then the user could scroll up and down (or perhaps press a down page button on the top next to the hold that thought button )between the two screen to find the words they need. Words would still technically be in the same place, just need be to scroll to find them. I understand that this would make the process to communicate a tad bit slower but I imagine some people are unable to use speak for yourself because the grid buttons are too small. And they choose a different app. So if you do this or something similar it would open up your amount of users by a huge amount, for those with severe motor impairments. Just a suggestion. Those are little things I find worth thinking about but definitely, no complaints. This app is one of the best.
It's Good!
I was super excited to see the lite version because a few years ago when i was deciding on whether to pick this or proloquo2go, i picked that app. But i was still curious about it. And it's a good app. It's fine, it's different. Love the vocabulary, love the morphology page. Takes a long time to get used to, but that's standard for any aac program. Wish you could stop it from speaking each word, and also if you could remove some of the labels for words. (like: or, the, as, a, an. or words with "self explanatory symbols" like up, down, left, right arrows and some other buttons) The speaking each word really stops it from being 5 stars, but it is a good app. i do like it. It's a good option.
Disappointed.
I wanted to try this, but after i started trial, There was only a few words. And also, The edit, and babble but were not working, so i had no way of editing the tiles. Not happy.
Doesn’t work
I downloaded the SFY-lite successfully but when clicking begin free trial, it doesn’t change. Really discouraged
Wonderful potential
Do not misunderstand the title of this post. The potential that is eluded to is the potential my daughter has to speak through this app. The layout of the screen is easy to understand for my 3 year old. She is enjoying the lite version immensely. More importantly, she seems to understand that this "game" on her iPad will talk when she herself is verbally unable.
Finally, a fluid language system that a child can grow with
My daughter has been using the App "Speak for yourself" for five months. She had a Dynavox for about 10 years…over time, she used that system less and less. Therapists thought it was because she had nothing to say, but the reality was she outgrew the Dynavox. Within a week of using SFY, Jessie was able to find words to ask for what she wanted and put a sentence together, commenting on a movie we were watching. Within six weeks, she said "I love you, Mom". When she came home with an award from work, her father said "is that for doing good work" and her response was "no, exceptional".
She went from an isolated 21 year old, to someone who has a lot to say! This is the most fluid, well thought out system that you can find. It was developed by speech therapists who did their homework, (and I believe it was clinically tested as well) to create something that is out of the box awesome! Specifically what I like is the fact that as the child learns language, you add more. It really does grow with them. We could pre-program sentences, but then Jess would be saying what we think she wants to say. It's so much more interesting for her and for us to see what SHE wants to say.
Finally, no one believed that she would be able to use this because her fine motor skills are poor, however, no one can evaluate what someone's desire to communicate is. Speak for Yourself has changed the our world. Awesome!
Great AAC app using the philosophy of language acquisition through motor planning
I am a SLP who has a student who was recommended this app for communication. He quickly adapted to its layout and structure. The babble feature allowed for language expansion opportunities as he was ready for them. It's ease of use was conducive to this therapist, his family and the student. The newer updates include a useful word finder. I would highly recommend for both pediatric and adult populations.
