Description

Shape is a polyphonic synthesiser allowing the user to draw the shape of the oscillator waveform. The first half of the oscillator is represented by 32 blocks and the second half is its mirror, generating all sorts of possible raw retroish sounds. 16 pages per oscillator allows to interpolate between different shapes. Add effects like arpeggio, stereo delay and a resonant filter and record your sounds on a classic tape. Modulate any parameter with keyboard, MIDI MPE or the device accelerometer. Connect to other apps with AudioBus, IAA, AUv3 and midi.

shapesynth Reviews

raw indeed!

ManAmplified on

If you're a fan of raw waveform synthesis (no filtering - raw) you will love shapesynth. You can create chip type sounds, but shapesynth is capable of far more than that. Being able to draw waveforms is brilliant. The add, subtract, and multiply functions create some very interesting sounds as well. A very flexible sound creator. The sequencer is unusual. Lots of fun. Brilliant. The tape recorder function is very useful. Record the sequencer, or play in the notes with the built in keyboard directly to tape recorder. slow down or speed up the tape. tape recording can be synced to other apps!! very good delay/echo which can be synced or unsynced. If the grit/aliasing is too much for you ( i love it ), simply use the filter to remove. shapesynth with a fuzz, waveshaper, distortion, overdrive function would make it untouchable, but I'm being greedy. I'll use AUM or audiobus to add that ;-) Thank you for the great instruments humbletunes/Erik.

Superb experimental synth

This is great. The user interface is semi-intuitive but at times hard to grasp. But once you master all the functions it's worth it. The interface puts you in a trance-like mood just as (most importantly) the sounds within do. I love the easy waveform sculpting and the (unexpected) mic sampler. Great stuff! I love setting a huge note decay and layering notes with a comblike wave pattern. The ball-in-a-box filter is a good addition. Anyhow this is a great tool for creativity. A real instrument rising out of an obvious experimental intent. Love the quirky tape recorder as well (tip of the hat to the OP-1?). Cheers!

Luv it!

Awesome app for ambient/drone-ish tones, wish the enveloppe were more accurate, there is always a slight release/attack on the sound and a lot of aliasing, but thats part of its charm too!.. The tape recorder is very flexible and reminds me of a tiny version of the tape found in the op-1. I wish I could record audio from the line input/mic straight to it. Combined with midi, its awesome, very recommended! Cant wait for future update, he always add a lot of interesting feature

Disappointed

Was expecting to get evolving SoundScapes. Instead, all the app seems to produce is variations on a theme.

Nice Update and now AU!

Glad to see this go AU. Get all of this devs apps. They are excellent! UPDATE 11/2018: The controls are somewhat cryptic but once you know what they do (as the on-screen hints indicate) you will find these are very cool apps. This update makes this much more fun. Nice crazy sounds. Get it!

Erik The Great does it again!

First class updates to a first class app from a first class developer. Get them all! What are you waiting for?

Absolutely love the concept here, but I'm getting all sorts of crackling static sounds when playing any note. Tried closing all other apps and it still crackles. I'm using an iPhone 6s. Can you fix it Erik?

Unique

I love Erik Sigth a.k.a. Humbletunes' apps. Imaginative, inexpensive, innovative and like nothing else on iOS. Buy them all.

Allows you to create some rich sounds.

This update makes it a lot of fun to experiment and make sounds that are extremely good for such a low priced synth. Very cool interface.

Erik's update makes it a whole new app

Erik Sigth's apps are some of the most unique iOS music production tools around. They all have a GUI that admittedly one likes or doesn't like most of the time. If there are indicators to what a control does or at least a manual or help (?) option I don't mind the layouts. Thing with the old version of the shapesynth was trying to make patches while using such a bare interface did cause problems. Now that things are labeled and laid out better, the synth is a joy to play. And a totally unheralded aspect of this synth is the brilliant recorder. For an old analog dude who learned on Tascam PortaStudios there is the joy of seeing the little tape graphic and some of the more tape oriented controls. The real use of the recorder should be explored, most synths get AudioBussed or AUMed out to a DAW like Auria or Cubasis, this recorder can allow you to make some cool experimental soundscapes and then manipulate them further on in a DAW or app like Samplr. Just a great app for under $5 and incredible at just $2.
