Description

Enjoy NSW beaches. Be SharkSmart
Check the latest sightings by Surf Life Saving drones and tagged shark detections before you hit the water in NSW. A better awareness and understanding of sharks and their behaviour can help everyone enjoy the beach and reduce the chances of a shark encounter.

The SharkSmart app provides information and resources such as Alerts to help you reduce the chance of a close encounter with a shark at NSW beaches and estuaries.
Stay SharkSmart with our app.

Maps
The Maps feature shows where the user is in relation to the general location of beaches with shark mitigation gear, alerts about shark-related incidents and news and real-time information from NSW’s VR4G tagged shark listening stations. Beachgoers can download the app and set it to receive tagged shark alerts at certain times and locations.

Watch compatible
If you have a smart watch running Wear OS by Google, the SharkSmart App also comes with a companion smart watch app to receive SharkSmart alerts. These alerts can be viewed by your location with the “around me” feature or set up to receive alerts for a region, by time or favourite beaches.

Species
This feature presents images of dangerous and non-dangerous sharks and other marine animals that sting and bite for information and education purposes.

Social Media
The app has links to the official NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development social media channels including Facebook, NSW SharkSmart Twitter and YouTube. There’s also a link to the Department’s SharkSmart webpage so users can be up to date with the latest information provided by the department.
Information
Details about the NSW Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program are provided.

My Risk
It provides a range of interactive features and resources including a fundamental risk assessment profile that allocates a user into a ‘risky’ or ‘safer’ behaviour rating using factors understood to affect shark bite risk. Risk rating escalates higher or lower subject to the input of the user (e.g. swimming at sunrise or dawn would increase the risk). The risk level can be reduced by adjusting risky behaviour but never eliminated (unless the user doesn’t go in the water)

Other Safety Programs
The NSW Government hosts, supports and/or promotes a range of other water safety programs. Links to key programs are provided so user can get the most out of NSW beautiful waterways while staying safer.

Time for some updates

Don Tweddle on

Decent idea and mostly works, but keeps forgetting my Favourite Beaches. And then you get so many alerts, you’ve either got to stop push notifications or remove the app. I’ve put off leaving a negative review but it doesn’t seem to be getting fixed Also it would be great if you could find out more information about a shark, such as what size it was when it was first tagged.

Doesn’t remember beaches

Doesn’t keep the selected beaches. Constantly wants my location. It’s supposed to be tracking the sharks not me!

Great app with issues

Dannycro on

Australia

I love this app and can see so much potential in it but I have a major issue with it… I use this app to feel safer whilst surfing and have even caught a Apple watch to use whilst surfing but the issue I find with the app is I get a notification 10-30 minutes after a shark has been detected meaning I’ve been surfing with a shark in the water for 30 minutes to then find out after. If this was sorted and I was notified immediately then this app would be great but otherwise it’s pointless if you find out after you have been in the water and not whilst. Please sort this and I’d love this app very much

MY IDEA AND GIFT TO THE PEOPLE AND NSW GOV

I thought of this! I am a regular local scuba diver and surfer when I was younger. I hope everyone in NSW stays safe now with this app 😊

There is something seriously wrong

It doesn't work, it crashes all the time. I reinstalled several times, but the error remained.

App keeps crashing

Hi guys, Fantastic job putting out this app for NSW. Issue is, I recently downloaded it and it keeps crashing when I open it. I receive notifications, but can’t use the app.

Very cool app

It’s heaps fascinating tracking sharks (with info about size and type as well as location now and where they’ve been!) even if u never get in the water. But obviously it’s a must-have app for swimmers & surfers to know when tagged monsters are at their local beach!

Crashing app

Can’t access the app without it crashing…

App continuously keeps crashing. Have uninstalled and reinstalled- using latest updates etc. Would be great app if that wasn’t happening
