With Shutter-Speed you can test the shutter speeds of your analog cameras just with your iPhone. Please note that the full potential of this App is only reached if you use it in combination with the PhotoPlug. The PhotoPlug is an optical sensor which connects to the headphone-jack of your iPhone and enables you to measure the actual amount of light passing through the camera shutter. Please visit www.filmomat.eu for detailed information and for ordering the PhotoPlug.
How-To:
Point the camera towards a bright light source. Place the PhotoPlug closely behind the camera shutter. Start the measurement and release the shutter. The App automatically analyzes the signal and calculates the shutter speed. All measurement values can be stored into a handy table. Multiple different cameras/lenses can be stored. A correction factor is calculated, which you can use to compensate a faulty shutter speed. For example, if you measure the 1/60s and it turns out to be 1/50s, the App will tell you that the shutter-speed is 1/3 stops too long. This gives rise to a correction factor of -1, indicating that you have to close your aperture by 1/3 f-stop to get a correct exposure.
Without PhotoPlug, the App will record the sound of the camera shutter and calculate the shutter speed from that. Please note that this procedure will only give useable results for speeds below 1/30sec. With the PhotoPlug, shutter speeds up to 1/500sec can be measured.

Shutter-Speed FAQ
Is Shutter-Speed free?
Yes, Shutter-Speed is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is Shutter-Speed legit?
🤔 The Shutter-Speed app's quality is mixed. Some users are satisfied, while others report issues. Consider reading individual reviews for more context.
Ruined it
It no longer records shutter speeds longer than 1/2 second correctly, and the interface is now far less intuitive. You’ve crippled a very capable app. Why? Update in response to developer: when I attempt to measure 1 second, it gives a nonsense value, usually in the range of 1/400th to 1/600th second. That’s what I mean when I say it no longer works for 1 second exposures.
Developer responds to say they don’t understand my problem, very dismissive.
Disappointed in 2.0 update
I feel like the automatic signal analysis and peak detection makes this version less than reliable than the old version. It is always dicey using an LED light source since LED light output is not constant, but I did find one that I was able to use until this update. Also, the zooming of the waveform is extremely inconsistent and I find myself fighting the app to get it to zoom in and out. Overall the old version worked better for me.
It does work
Bought a photo plug years back and I could never get the clean on and off signal as shown in their company video. The signal captured was full of noise. Until I realized that most of the iphone lighting adapters are for headphones . Until I got a "trrs (tip, ring, ring, sleeve) to lighting" adapter for microphone. Most are "trs" and will not work properly when connected to an iphone, Also ensure it's Apple MFI certified. Now it's working without issue.
It stopped the guessing
I refurbished a 1965 Nikon F recently and needed to test the shutter before wasting any film. With the photo plug and my iPhone X (yeah, it’s a couple upgrades shy of new) I have some very accurate numbers to work with. I can now make adjustments inside the camera, and re test it, or just use the compensation calculations. The Photo plug and app are a no brainer for any film enthusiast that is questioning their old cameras exposures.
Doesnt work
Got this to use with a 2018 ipad and got the photoplug as well. The audio only method works fine, but the software doesnt recognize the photoplug. Old software, i suspect the developer has lost interest.
Works fine!!
If you know anything about cameras this is simple and easy to use. A shame to trash a perfectly good piece of software because you’re clueless. The description makes it clear that it only works to 30th without sensor and instructions are built in.
Nothing works
Nothing works in this app. I’m using it in iOS 13.
Very usedful
For old large format lenses to measure their accuracy to be able to compensate if necessary.
Essential Tool For Vintage Cameras
The Shutter Speed app and the matching Photo Plug are fantastic additions to my toolbox! Easy to use - the app is always with you when you shoot - It's great. Just look up the camera you're using that day and get really dialed in on your exposure. Even slide film. My only request? Why not measure 1/1000 sec.? I can easily measure it, but there is no place to record the measurement.
Thanks and great work!
