Prescription Required: Sleepio

The sleep improvement app

Published by: BIG HEALTH

Description

Note: This version of Sleepio is prescription-only. If you’re accessing Sleepio through your employer benefits, please download “Sleepio 3.0”.
Sleepio is an online sleep improvement program proven to help you clear your mind, get better sleep, and have better days.
Sleepio isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. It incorporates your unique needs to create a customized six-week program that you
complete at your own pace. Each session builds on the last, guiding you step-by-step through methods proven to help you quiet your racing mind, reshape your behaviors, and get better sleep — all in about 20 minutes per week.
The program uses cognitive behavioral techniques that are backed by decades of clinical research, and has undergone more testing than some of the most common sleep medications. In 14 randomized controlled trials with over 8,000 people, Sleepio was proven to help participants fall asleep 54% faster, spend 62% less time awake at night, and have 45% better functioning the next day. You’ll have access to all of this clinical evidence from directly within the app.

KEY FEATURES:
A customized program of clinically proven cognitive and behavioral techniques, designed to get your sleep schedule, thoughts, and lifestyle into shape over six tailored sessions.
A comprehensive onboarding approach with an in-depth questionnaire that shapes your tailored program experience.
Sleep Diary to track your progress and monitor your sleep efficiency as you work towards your sleep goals.
Instant, bite-sized support through the “Help Me Now” feature to get back on track after a long night or rough morning.
“The most effective, long-term solution for poor sleep is a cognitive and behavioral approach, which addresses the mental and behavioral parts of the individual’s sleep pattern,” shared Professor Espie. “These approaches help the person to think and behave differently in relation to their sleep, which encourages good sleep to return. Sleepio is a clinically proven digital sleep improvement program that uses cognitive and behavioral techniques to help users with persistent sleep problems.”

Changed my life

HohoAuntie on

I am in the US and started using Sleepio in September, 2017, when I was 63 years old. I had suffered from insomnia for many decades, and was using Ativan, a benzodiazepine, for about 10 years. My doctor said it was safe and non habit forming, and that she used it herself. When I retired and moved to a new state, my new doctor said I should get off of that pill because it’s more dangerous the older you get. Around the same time, I saw a brief mention about Sleepio in a magazine. I went through the entire program over several months, and soon after, I was completely off of Ativan. I gradually reduced my dosage over several months, and now only use it during international travel with significant time differences. I don’t know if the program is different now, but I found the Community interaction to be crucial for success. Most of the members were from the UK, so it didn’t seem to be used in the US very much. I highly recommend this program. In the UK, it’s covered by the National Health Service. I don’t know if insurance covers it yet in the US. I didn’t pay anything, because I think it may have still been in a testing mode. But it absolutely worked for me. Like other programs (losing weight, getting off drugs or cigarettes, etc) you have to be determined and motivated, and trust the process. Interacting with the community within the app is also key. Best of luck in your journey to better sleep, AuntieHoho.

Gets to the point

This app requires discipline. When I am able to exercise the willpower to follow its guidance, my sleep is greatly improved. I have done some backsliding. But then I see that problems result. Now, I am following the guidance and my total average sleep per week is increasing between five and 15 minutes. Also, it is nearly always uninterrupted sleep. I have been using the app for six months. It is not a magic bullet quick fix. It requires commitment and consistency. I have gone from sleeping maybe four hours a night with interruptions to sleeping over seven hours, almost never awakening. I never could have done this alone. Thank you.

I want to try it but it won't let me

For some idiotic reason, it won't let you create an account unless it's covered by your insurance plan. I'm willing to pay out of pocket. This is discrimination, pure and simple. Or else stupidity.

No Apple Watch Sync

MrJSN on

United States

I like the app but it would be so much better if it supported Apple Watch sync. It only syncs with Fitbit.

Add support for iWatch

My first impression, it doesn’t have iWatch support. Will update my review after sometime.

Way too manual

pocojake on

United States

Only syncs to a Fitbit. Who has time to manually enter their sleep patterns everyday? For the price of the ap it should sync to Apple or come with a free Fitbit.

Glitch

It won’t let me progress to the next session even though I’ve watched session 2 FIVE times all the at through. I always wait a full week and then rewatch. I’ve done this over and over and over. It’s been almost a month and I can’t access the next session.

I was hoping for shift work and continuous change in my bed time and how to handle it.

Stuck

GaelicDragons on

United States

I completed the intro session but can’t move forward in the app because it says I haven’t completed it. Every time I click resume it starts over. I don’t want to listen to 15 minutes of the guy talking again! Why is there no skip or at least a fast forward option?
