Description

SLP TechTools Minimal Pairs is a speech therapy app developed by speech language pathologists to assist SLPs as they target phonological and articulation disorders in children, pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade.
The app includes fun and engaging pictures of 367 words to facilitate discrimination and accurate production of speech sounds. It covers 8 commonly used phonological processes: Final Consonant Deletion, Fronting, Cluster Reduction, Prevocalic Voicing Gliding, Stopping, Depalatalization, Deaffrication and Gliding.
As an In App Purchase, users can build custom processes with photos from their iPad Camera, Photo Library or Dropbox Account. Spoken word samples are recorded from the iPad.
Three practice formats include: auditory discrimination, contrast drill, and repetition drill. Progress monitoring in client history tracks improvement and allows users to observe improvement over multiple speech therapy sessions. Results can be emailed as you wish.
The app gives the therapist maximum control of each session. All buttons are oriented near the therapist and away from the child. The pictures will not change nor will the voiced word repeat unless the speech therapist pushes the button. Voice recording and playback are available for immediate feedback.

Dissapointed

You cannot pick what pairs. They are grouped already by processes.

Disappointing

When the app is not frozen, which is rarely, it does not provide good results. It simply provides accuracy and a space to write notes but does not provide WHICH words were missed. Would not recommend as is. Might purchase Minimal Pairs academy by Smarty Ears.

Processes Named Incorrectly, Confusing

The process of Gliding is not covered in the gliding folder....it is in a duplicate folder entitled "Final consonant deletion" on my version (which is up to date), and there are sh/t and sh/s replacement processes under the folder actually called "gliding". When and how did this happen, and how can I change it? Otherwise it is a great app.

Needs some updating

I like this app for phonological processes work, but nothing works but the pictures. I don't get any sound or word ID when the picture is touched and the "bar" is upside down. The pictures are great!

Disappointed

I am unhappy with the choice of words for the process deaffrication. Most kids don't substitute /t/ for /sh/, yet this is the sound provided. There are so many good contrast words for /s/ and /sh/. I don't understand why the /t/ sound was selected. Other wise, it is a good program. My bad. The words I was looking for are under depalatization.

Expensive & disappointing

I finally invested in a app that seemed to be all I needed to cover Minimal Pairs for therapy with my clients. Pros: The format is user friendly, offers data tracker per client, and targets 8 processes: deaffrication, prevocalic voicing, cluster reduction, fronting, stopping, gliding, depalatalization and final consonant deletion. Cons: You are not given more than 15 words per target area (only 4 words in some target areas!). Not all processes are covered! Syllable reduction, vocalization and postvocalic devoicing are NOT covered. Only initial sounds are targeted; the medial and final positions of a word are not targeted. Summary: All in all the design is excellent but with the asking price of $29.99 I am disappointed with how much is left out. I will be asking for a refund. Not a satisfied customer :(

Very useful

I'm a very busy SLP. This app is very useful. I would suggest that the record button stay on as the student alternates between word pairs so that they can judge their skill at contrasting sounds.

Finally an app for phono kids!

I thought I was buying an all inclusive app with an app from smarty ears, but this one actually uses minimal pairs! Offering the lite version also gets an A+ in my book. I would like to see the last section of drill be more interactive for the kids. Even in my boring traditional therapy the kids like to "knock my fingers down" with multiple productions of the same word, so a simple pic. flip or some sort of graphic when tapped would be a great drill reinforcer. I also love the matching game in articulation station. Adding this kind of component with minimal pairs would be a great asset to the app. It is a greaoral, but is missing that interactive component for my young tech. savy students. Like most articulation/phono. apps now, it has a great report function and the appeal for the therapist is clearly well thought out, but nothing most of the articulation apps out at the moment don't already do. I do have to say how impressed I was with the ability to choose the process and specific phonemes within the process, this is definitely a feature other apps do not deliver. Again job well done making a therapist friendly app., including having the data tracking mechanisms oriented so the child is facing you (I find it a bit easier to visually model placement cues:). I will say this was a great value. It delivers a lot of material for a price that is definitely competitive.

This app combines every minimal pair card you've ever owned into a simple and engaging app. My patients love it and it's so easy to keep data. I don't remember how I did phonological processes therapy before it!
