Speed Limit App displays the current speed limit and your current speed. It detects European speed limit signs using the camera while driving and enhances the results by map based limits from OpenStreetMap. Thus it will even know limits which are not indicated by signs (i.e. Zone 30, or inner city areas). Of course it will warn you when you are too fast.
► Working principle of Speed Limit App
Speed Limit App is a road sign recognition app. For inner city limits we use map based information from OpenStreetMap. Both information is merged to provide an optimal limit indication. The speedometer gets its data from the GPS and is used to determine wether you are above or below the actual limit of the last detected road sign.
► Limitations of Speed Limit App
Speedometer Radar Camera does a computational intensive job that formerly was limited to mainframes. Therefore there are some restrictions:
- At night and in adverse lighting conditions the recognition of road signs might fail due to iPhone camera limitations.
- The app is optimized for European road signs. Unfortunately there is yet no support for US speed limits.
- There is no support for 'end of limit' signs yet and no support for place/city signs that might also decrease the speed limit according to local traffic road regulations.
- Sometimes road signs in narrow turns are missed due to the limited view angle of the camera
- Sometimes there are missed or false road sign detections
- Speedometer is updated every second

Speedometer Limit Camera Reviews
Nice Concept, Clean Design, Doesn’t Work
I gave myself every opportunity to be pleased with this app but didn’t get there. It only detects about one in six to eight signs. It didn’t detect any that were at an odd angle to the edge of the road, and suburban signs in Australia may be a bit smaller than in other countries but they follow the European design. It also didn’t pick up temporary speed reduction signs at roadworks which is a situation where it could be most useful. The app screen is clear and simple, but the data displayed isn’t reliable.
Driving safe
Awesome app use it every time
Learner drivers
Good for checking that they are doing the speed they are allowed. And checking your card speed Wehrmacht passing a camera with out the themed on display. 10/10
Great app best one
Great app
Has potential
Excellent for identifying speed signs. Alarm feature could be modified to signal 1,2,3 or in a loop. With the option of changing the alarm type for hard of hearing. Also the subscription reminder comes up every 5min (very annoying)
Not accurate
There are about 6km of difference between the speed in this application and the actual odometer , therefore if the limit is 60 it will not sound the alarm until your speed is actually 66km, therefore you will get a fine before the alarm sounds, not good
Other applications don’t have this inaccuracy!!
Pse Fix
Used to work well until upgrade - really useful. Now not so good as it is only able to recognise a small fraction of the speed limit signs in Australia (the purpose for which it was designed I presume). I am only interested in soeed limit signs. Of course, I could be doing something wrong.
CarPlay
No apple CarPlay and sound when over speed limit doesn’t work
Doesn’t work on iPad 3
States “Metal shaded devices not supported “
Disappointing
The App could be great but I cannot find a setting that will adjust it so that Australian Speed signs are recognised. Have written to Developer asking if there is a setting to correct this. No response received. I paid the additional for the Pro upgrade but that made no difference
