- Combine with SCRIBE ORIGINS series to learn basic vocab and kanji.
StudyChat Japanese is designed for you as the intermediate-level traveller who wants to become familiar with phrases from different situations. If you already know the basics of the language and you want another tool to practice with, then this is for you.
StudyChat Japanese has been intentionally designed as a fun supplementation to existing study methods. There are many excellent resources for learning grammar and vocabulary. But there are few tools, aside from watching TV with subtitles, that simulate conversations for practicing what you have already learnt.
StudyChat Japanese also includes a bucketload of background and character styles, to keep your mind as interested as "study" possibly can be.

StudyChat Japanese Reviews
Its alright
Starting the app and I start on the tenses lesson, at first I wasn’t really sure what was going on as it would give the ability to select an answer but there was only one choice so it was impossible to get the answer wrong, later more multiple choices appear but this wasn’t obvious at the beginning.
When the other multiple choices appear the selections don’t make a lot of sense tbh as even with the vaguest of Japanese knowledge you can infer the correct answer… in tenses for example, it should really provide all selectable answers stating the same answer but in the various tenses and with you selecting the correct tense based on the English presented but that’s not the case here…. So as a result you don’t really absorb the actual content of the lesson… more often than not I’ll just look at the first word and hit the answer as the other possible answers are completely unrelated thus I’ve bypassed the point of the lesson. Not only that but some of the answers in this category don’t even relate to tenses at all but are just general vocab, “nice to meet you” and “later” and so on … sure useful for beginners but irrelevant to the lesson at hand.
Like the other reviewer stated, I also get the impression the conversations taking place are overly casual, in which case it might be a good idea to make that known in the app itself.
Formatting issues, possibly as a result of screen size but some words are split up in strange ways (even though there is plenty of room to display on one line) as well as the kana not appearing directly above the corresponding sentence can make it tricky to read.
Conversations themselves seem fun and I’m sure you could pick up some bits and bobs with this app but can’t help thinking it could be so much better 😢
Liked it..... but
As much as I loved this app for it's huge variety of situations and hilarity of flirty phrases I found there to be too many incorrectly spelt romaji phrases, which kind of made me lose trust in which text was correct and what wasn't for any new phrases I hadn't learnt yet.
That put me off actually using many of the phrases in person as I had learnt elsewhere from previous studies what certain words and phrases were but here were written as something else. I feel this app is a great tool overall but the romaji in-corrections were abit too blatant to pass on...
Although I have learnt quite a considerable amount of new Japanese words I didn't know prior to using this app which I can implement into my own sentences, so thank you for that at least. Visually I loved it, I liked how it had various locations and multiple character choices and animated background plus I must say a pretty inspirational menu soundtrack which made me want to learn more.
For the next update I think the romaji text should be fixed as what the speaker said on several occasions was not what was on screen.
Kinda creepy conversations
So the first thought that comes to mind for learning a new language isn't walking straight up to someone and going "hello. I like pretty girls. You are pretty.". I guess the app might be targeted at guys... As a female I just found it creepy and a bit offensive.
Not bad at all
I like this programme. I'm using it along with a flash card programme and a kanji practice programme and finding the combination really good. The only down side for me is that you can't really review new phases or vocabulary. You only see them in the practice. Aside from this though I am finding it really good.
Okay
Annoying that the text is only in kanji (though romaji is used, it's quite infrequent). If a person doesn't know all the kanji yet (which they won't if they're trying to learn from this app) it's very unhelpful to have the explanation boxes only tell you the words written in kanji. Other than that, it's an enjoyable way to practise.
Good but with issues Developers - please read this!
I like the app but there are some bugs in it, I reported them in Support section but when I tried to read the reply from developers the screen goes completely blank/white so I have to close the app to be able to use it again and of course can't now use the Support to report it - I do hope the developers read reviews cause you need to fix it. It's a vicious circle at the moment :( The bugs are detrimental to the over all learning experience so give it a go, you'll like it if you like manga or Kawaii-ness ;)
worth to buy!
This is the first time I buy app, and it is really worthy! Conversations are funny and easy to remember! 2.99 pounds is fair! Hope this app could create more conversation to us And update more!
Great app for practicing Japanese
I love this app, really good for listening and/or reading practice, plus great for building vocabulary.
I also like the learning algorithm that paces introduction of new words and tracks words that are not being learnt and moves off words that are learnt.
Well done to the developers of this app.
Really good so far!!
Will give proper review soon!
Good development
I am really liking this app. The developers have obviously tried to include as many words in as possible. This is good for practicing, but makes for some interesting conversations sometimes. My only suggestion would be to make it more natural. For example, "I'm 20 years old" followed by "20 months old? oh that's bad". I get that it's trying to introduce the word "month". It just doesn't sound so natural :) Other than that, it's great, especially for practicing.
