Is Sync EV free?
Yes, Sync EV is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is Sync EV legit?
⚠️ The Sync EV app has poor ratings and negative feedback. Users seem unsatisfied with its performance or features.
Recently I’ve found that charging stats are either missing or logged with the wrong date. This is not consistent, however. A charge done on 30th April never showed up on the app, and a charge last night (12th May) is listed as having happened on 5th May! This makes the logging of stats pretty pointless.

Terrible App and not a great product either
The system constantly disconnects from the car and the only way to reset it is to physically unplug the car. Does not hand fluctuations in power at all, which every home will have as you turn TVs, kettles, microwaves on and off.
Change of wifi supplier
It’s not very easy to change the wifi set up on the charger unit. if you change broadband supplier or wifi router.
It would be much better if this was something you could do from within the app rather than using the engineers installation guide.
Payment?
Getting really frustrated with this rubbish app. How does 17.5kwh at 4p per kWh equate to £3.80?? And why when I ask for off peak start at 1am does it start charging at midnight?
Fickle
Mostly it works. But about a quarter of the time it doesn’t. I plug it in, confirm the charge and nothing happens. Turning on and off at the fuse box fixes it. But it is so irritating. It is right next to my router so it should not be a wi-fi connection issue.
I like the hardware. A pity the software is so poor.
Intelligent home charging point
The SyncEV intelligent home charging point is discreet and well featured. This associated app provides all that one needs. In particular for setting up scheduled charging useful for off peak ‘refuelling’. Just as well as our VW ID.3 is incapable of doing this on its own.
There does appear to be a limitation of the app in that you can enter tariffs for on and off peak but it doesn’t seem to calculate costs per session. Edit (6 June 2022) - Since a recent update of the app costs are now showing for charging events. I’m not sure I understand how they are calculated but they are present.
Other than that, there is no explanation in the app about features for entering RFID card details or mentioned public charging. Not a problem for me but a little confusing.
The SyncEV device itself sometimes drops of the 4G network (though we have strong signal on the driveway). Powering off and on fixes that but it can be annoying as the switch is indoors in the cellar.
I have found support from the company to be both prompt (via the request form) and effective. A few weeks back some features seemed to have gone missing from the app. SyncEV diagnosed a failed firmware update (of the charging unit). They pushed an update to the device and all was fixed without me having to do anything.
All in all, a good experience with SyncEV and this app. The app could do with some more help text however.
Not fit for home use
Seems to be designed for public/commercial use. As a home solution it’s really not great. Hope they figure out an update/upgrade soon. Poor user experience as a household/family with only one person able to connect.
Useless piece of rubbish
From the get-go it was unreliable, requiring regular rebooting. Now, after 9 months, I tried using smart charging and it has broken completely. Oh, and the app is a UX nightmare. Possibly the most hopeless piece of design I’ve encountered in the 21st century. If I’d paid £50 for it I would have been disappointed, however it cost more than £500 (after the government grant!!). Words cannot express my disgust.
Avoid
My unit worked OK for 8 months but developed a fault last week which means I cannot charge my car at all, even manually. Sync EV are not responding to emails, there now is not option to telephone them and even my installer cannot get a response from them.
Very Disappointing!
