Tailscale

Secure Connectivity & Mesh VPN

Published by: Tailscale

Description

Securely connect people, workloads, and even AI agents to anything on the internet with Tailscale, the secure connectivity platform built on WireGuard®. Tailscale brings identity to the network layer so you can control access based on users, groups, tags, and devices instead of IP addresses, applying Zero Trust principles end-to-end across every environment.
Tailscale transforms your existing network from a legacy hub and spoke model to a modern, lightweight, and responsive mesh networking architecture that eliminates single points of failure and delivers better performance, scalability, and security for your end users, devices, and remote resources.
Tailscale can be used for your Homelab VPN and connectivity, Business VPN, Workload Connectivity across clouds, Kubernetes clusters, regions, and environments, Privileged Access Management (PAM), Edge & IoT, CI/CD, and Securing AI – all on the same platform.
Replace legacy VPNs, connect workloads across on-prem and cloud infrastructure providers, power Zero Trust initiatives, and make remote access secure by simplifying software-defined networking and security operations. Modernize your home, your organization, and your enterprise networking at scale with Tailscale.
Tailscale is hardware-agnostic, so you can make decisions about your hardware independently from decisions about your network. Tailscale creates an overlay network, using your existing network, so you can incrementally deploy Tailscale without needing new network switches or to change your network architecture.
Tailscale integrates with 100+ technologies and dozens of identity providers, and is available on a wide range of platforms — including Apple’s macOS, iOS, and tvOS — so you can securely connect from wherever you work.

Tailscale Reviews

Keeps getting stuck starting and slow

Hefndtrhhm on

United Kingdom

It keeps getting stuck starting when turning on the VPN so keep having to toggle for it to activate. It also doesn't play well with mobile data and seems to keep taking the longest possible route and get huge ping times and slow.

Very impressive

They really are doing things right, free, packed full of features, incredibly secure, minimalist, no ads, and supporting zero knowledge and decentralisation not dependent on their own servers. Superb.

Brilliant and free

Not only am I able to access my home PC from anywhere, I run a subnet with a Raspberry Pi at home and that allows me to remotely control my Icom ham radio equipment, that connects via RJ45 Ethernet, using the iPhone SDR-modem app over Tailscale when away from home. The Tailscale app is very stable and “just works”.

Great but latest update killing battery

M1kol on

United Kingdom

Since the latest update yesterday my battery is dropping like a stone. I’ve had to charge it twice and another top up in one day (iPhone 15 pro). Now supports Controld DNS which makes this a must use app for me. So despite the battery issues it is great. If that could be fixed it would be five stars.

It’s great but it drains battery

It’s an amazing product but you have to be careful with usage as it drains battery a lot, especially if you use exit node.

Absolutely brilliant

Tailscale is a fantastic service that makes my life so much easier. It’s easy to setup with great features - HTTPS, taildrop and Tailscale ssh for example are brilliant and just the general NAT wizardry removes a layer of hassle/annoyance - it automagically deals with everything and just works. The VPN on demand feature ensures connection and is configurable and it seems like the recent battery improvements in version 1.62.0 of the iOS app have improved the battery drain issues I was experiencing for my particular use case. It’s now using about 9% in a 24 hour period, so still some work to do - but now usable. I look forward to further battery optimisations that will hopefully get that down to 1-3% like WireGuard so I can continue to use the app. Overall though, Well done for a fantastic product and active support community. Truly a great product. 👍

Great but battery

Tailscale is generally awesome. I use it every day. Considering WireGuard isn’t supposed to be a ‘chatty’ VPN this app destroys my battery with background activity, making it almost unviable.

Probably the best no code solution

d.MLT on

United Kingdom

So far so good. I highly recommend it as it looks to be a secure VPN solution that is easy to setup and convenient to connect to a homelab or a development container. There are similar solutions out there but they require a lot of steps to set up and even more to main. Tailscale just works 👍

Fantastic

I’d previously been using WireGuard with a Raspberry Pi at my home and parent’s house. While this worked it was a good amount of config, setting up all my devices, etc. Tail scale is a breeze, SSO with Google for auth, subnets exposed so effortlessly I often forget that I’m going across the Tailscale connections when accessing NAS devices or CCTV NVR.

Outstanding

Don’t let the simple GUI fool you — Tailscale is an absolutely phenomenal service, with a generous personal plan. I’m using mine to route all my DNS queries through my Pi-hole, even outside of my local network. And TailDrop file sharing is a dream. Highly recommended!
