I don’t typically write reviews, but just wanted to put this here in hopes that it gets solved. I’ll start by saying I’ve loved sketches and used it for nearly five years! I’ve illustrated multiple children’s picture books using it as my primary software and I still find it to be incredibly intuitive while also powerful and nuanced enough to allow me to experiment creatively without losing access to the tried and true heart of what I initially loved and rely on for my work. When it works well, it’s hands down bar none my go-to. That said, since about a year ago it’s been glitching terribly often and crashing / freezing up. My iPad has plenty of space and is a recent model pro, and I always make sure the app is up to date. I am so sad to say that this crashing and glitching has, at times, caused me to lose work / have to restart compositions in progress. Unfortunately, unless these glitches are fixed, I’ve decided I’ll be switching to Procreate as I move forward in my work. Sketches is the perfect blend of power and simplicity, and if it happens to become sound and stable again I hope to be able to switch back.
I cannot find any of my prior work on my device or in iCloud. I do not like the default iCloud back up or explanation that it exists for my "protection." This makes me very angry. Why complicate? We are not ALL computer-geeks, nor do we wish to become experts on every possible 'thing.' How many user id / password / special requirements...what changed THIS TIME ? / what just happened that I did not intend ? This program is one among many that I use. Too much time is spent on housekeeping because of what the APP-Geeks did... because they could... not because it of a functional necessity. Enough is enough ... go make something NEW if you are bored or need job security. That would be great. Let me use the APP and love it... Martha in Tallahassee FL
well I love this app a lot. it’s so easy and fun to work with. only thing is that like, sometimes when your in the middle of a drawing, it will randomly close the app and just take you to your home screen. then, when you go back to your work, it will be like, either half started over, or it restarts the whole thing. it it SO ANNOYING. otherwise LUV this app.
The longer I use this app, the more glitches pop up. I recently reported a glitch where an entire square cell of my drawing will spontaneously go completely blank on one layer - and never comes back, no matter what I do. Now I have a new glitch — I can only draw straight lines, unless I move the tool very slowly, in which case the tool mark lags about a half-inch behind where my pen is touching the screen, and as soon as I stop moving the pen, or try to change direction, the last segment of the tool mark automatically goes straight. This would be great if I only drew straight lines, but I don’t. THIS GLITCH AFFECTS EVERY TOOL, EVEN IN NEW DOCUMENTS
5 full stars. Love this app [Tayasui Sketches Pro] since first download in 2020 [i think] is my [“other’] art creation application , i work on iPad Pro 2018 11 inch w the iPad Pro pencil. I very much enjoy the “realistic” sketchbooks SketchesPro features. The feel is like a set of watercolor books, this is so nice , having the separate “books” helps keep selections of drawings separate like i would in my sketchbooks whether the art is layered or not. I also keep different books synched across cloud or remain downloaded/ uploaded to various other places. The sounds are very pleasant, and yet the actual mechanics of drawing itself is never “gimmicky” nor do they take the back seat to anything. The water color is beautifully textured if [ one does make the purchase] and realistic. There are papered textures , export /import functions the ink pens and honesty of each tool stands alone on its own. The joy of digital is that any realistic tool can be used in a hyper-realistic way , this just depends upon ones imagination. Rather than keep with the explanation I would say to anyone reading , to watch the several videos the app has provided on their site from various artists . I definitely believe its sure is worth download and purchase - however the testimonials on both Apple store and the app page has FAQ’s which are rlly fantastic. Thank you so very much! RMS
Most frustrating drawing app I’ve ever used.
I downloaded your last update over a week ago and worked on some paintings last night. Today I open your app and all my carefully chosen colors have disappeared! I am still upset that you became obsessed with doing all the bell and whistle and a really great water color program became a mess about 6 years ago. It wasn’t broke so why did you destroy it? Can you bring back your original watercolor program with a new app only for watercolor? I’d pay extra for it. Seems you may be an artist yourself but you’ve confused making an app for other artists to use and depend on its reliability with showing off your app skills. Meantime those of us use who use the app have to change our style to suit your fickled whims Please, give us a stable, usable app and do something else with your need to add artistic endeavor to your app skills. Are you trying to get new artists or are you just trying to compete with other app people? PLEASE. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. A lot of other art app producers do the same thing . Case in point the Art 4 vs the earlier ArtSet app. I never use the new one and old one I can only use on an older iPad. I want to paint with comfort and not have to contend with your ridiculous fixes.
I’ve been using this for years, and recently a lot of great changes have been added. Clipping masks and drawing stabilizers have really added a lot of great functionality. I’m on mobile (not tablet) so I don’t get the full experience unfortunately (like landscape canvases, I would LOVE a landscape canvas), but it’s still very good! Add in the ability to change canvas dimensions and a more precise brush size changer (like being able to type in specific values instead of a sliding range), and it’d be just about perfect! But even now, it’s getting better every update :)
First, I’m a constant user of this app because for its price it’s interesting and does great stuff .. but if you push it hard like I do the app really struggles .. likely I don’t have memory allocated to it correctly or my iPad simply doesn’t have sufficient memory to run the app properly, and I don’t really understand how to do a lot of things that might be basic for more proficient users. I’ve had issues, but I don’t have a lot of money, and so I attempt to work through all the issues, it’s like using a faulty brush, but it gets you where you are trying to go if you don’t give up .. what I’m trying to do is produce high end publishable comic book illustrations and I’ve used this program to produce wonderful work, really AMAZING stuff by typical standards, and the new Masking tools are AWESOME. My sincere appreciation to the developers..
