Teanglann Reviews

Outstanding but could do with an update

Nick Moore (@pilotmoon) on

This is absolutely first class dictionary for Irish study. It contains three full dictionaries, a grammar resource, and sound files for three dialects. All of this is downloadable offline. The search function is very fast (if a little unforgiving of missing fadas). Content wise I cannot fault it, however, whilst very usable there are a couple of minor app flaws: 1. Sound files “stutter” when played back 2. App does not fill the whole screen 3. The “deep search” results cut off at a certain point only showing the top 20 or so results I note that the app has not been updated in four years, at the time of writing. I would still not hesitate to recommend this, but it would be nice to have a small update to correct these minor issues. Thank you to the developers of the app.

I hate this

On apple iOS 14.6 the sound files now have an obvious stutter. Apart from that the app is excellent.

This is an amazing resource for anyone learning or using the Irish language on a regular basis. It includes the Ó Dónaill [Irish-English] and de Bhaldrathe [English-Irish] dictionaries as well as the Ó Dónaill & Ua Maoileoin [Irish-Irish] dictionary. For learners, it gives pronunciations (in three dialects!) and the grammatical variations of many words and importantly it lets you create lists of favourites and recent searches to help you build word lists to improve your vocabulary in general. I really can’t recommend it enough. I haven’t encountered anything comparable for any other language.

Tá an aip seo go hiontach (this app is amazing)

If you’re a beginner this app is a life saver. The way you can carry an béarla go gaeilge agus Irish to English foclóir in your pocket is phenomenal and that’s not even before adding grammar, verb conjugation, and pronunciation in the three major dialects. Used daily, and deeply treasured.

A great app, but still missing some functionality.

I’ve been using the app years now, and it is a fantastic resource. I’ve reviewed it before and reported bugs, and these seem to have been removed since my reviews, so it seems the app is constantly being updated too, which is great. One feature which I still think is very important and sorely missing from the app is the grammar wizard. This can be accessed using the web interface for teanglann, but not apparently on the app. This would be a fantastic addition, and I hope it is something the developers will consider. Overall, though, it’s a great app and I use it all the time.

Incredible, but with a flaw

I use this app for school and it’s amazing! The only thing that I think is wrong with it is that when using on something like an iPad Air 4 or one of the newer iPad Pro’s, the app doesn’t fill the screen. It also ‘glitches’ in size when searching for words.

Invaluable

I use this all the time to look up words, to check the genders of words, and to help write essays in LC Gaeilge Árdleibhéal. Would recommend to anyone.
