Great intro to learning - would love test features!
I've been curious about learning ASL for a while so I was glad to find this app. First of all, it's free, so I could get a sense of things before I spent any money. Secondly, the app design is easy to use, looks nice (unlike many of the other apps out there, even paid ones, which are ugly as sin!) and has good features. The videos are clear, well-produced, and I like the different options to be able to see the alphabet signs Hand Only, With Shoulder, or With Face. I like the different people featured in the videos - their personalities come through and this helps to illustrate how important facial expression is while signing. I like the fact that you can Favorite items for quick reference later, and watch videos in slow motion. So far I have only been using the free chapters, but I will probably buy the bundle eventually to unlock all the signs! Finally, I appreciate the FAQ/About pages in this app. They give great info about the Deaf community and about how to use the app and why the app was produced. It's very well done. I feel informed and also part of something. What I feel is missing from the app is the ability to test your comprehension skills. For example, go into "practice" mode (vs "learning" mode) and after seeing a video of a random sign, you have to type out the word/phrase. Or the app gives you a phrase and you have to select the correct combination of signs from a list. I feel this feature would allow people to gain confidence in their ASL skills. Right now, for me as a beginner, it's fun to watch and learn a few new things, but I wouldn't feel comfortable saying "I know some ASL" or getting involved in the Deaf community. If that feature could be added I think this app could really be perfect!
