Description

Take a scientifically inaccurate romp in pirate-infested waters! Will you prove to the Royal German Marinological Society that mermaids really exist?

"The Daring Mermaid Expedition" is a 71,000-word interactive novel by Andrea Phillips, author of "The Daring Adventures of Lucy Smokeheart." Your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based--without graphics or sound effects--and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

You are an up-and-coming researcher, tasked with proving the existence of mermaids in order to be admitted to the exclusive Royal German Marinological Society. With a member of the Society as your patron, you’ll brave pirate attacks and dubious academics to fight your way to Broken Shell Island and scientize the mythical mermaid kingdom. Play as a vengeful mermaid-hater, dispassionate scientist, or soft-hearted daydreamer. Or just chuck it all and embrace piracy on the crew of the infamous Lucy Smokeheart herself!

Will you join the illustrious ranks of the Society, or wind up in prison for scientific fraud? Spend the rest of your life living underwater, or be devoured by carnivorous fish-people?

You’re on a mermaid expedition—it’s time to sink or swim.

Let me begin by saying that I love Choice of Games and have bought over thirty of their games. With that being said, this is the only one which I consider absolutely not worth the money. It seems to have fallen short of the quality of most of the other stories. *Spoiler warning for anyone who actually cares about anything that happens in this. The writing is rushed and often childish - and not in a good way. I read another Choice of Games story, Sixth Grade Detective, which obviously involved young characters and an elementary school setting, but which was many times more interesting and well-written than this one. For being such purportedly legendary creatures, the mermaids are found with little difficulty by the MC, which removes the satisfaction that comes from me actually having to figure anything out. There are some strange twists of phrase, such as: “She has turned a blazing red color, very like the hide of the crimson cave shark” “The crew don't much care for kids like you” I would look for more examples, but I can’t be bothered. It also feels like your choices don’t matter, since I’ve gotten the same ending three times regardless of the decisions I make. Plus there is only one love interest option. The other characters are unremarkable and underdeveloped. Crazy-mermaid-man and disapproving-fiancée-lady (I forgot their names because I didn’t have any reason to care about them) just had an unrealistic and rather juvenile relationship. The child whose name I also forgot is mostly just annoying. And the story completely skips over the part where MC trains with their mentor, thereby removing a great opportunity for character development and actual romantic progression. Likewise, the game doesn’t expand on any sort of culture that the mermaids have. There’s no reason for me to care about helping them conceal their presence from the Society at all. Honestly, if the mermaids are dumb enough to make a game out of biting some random schmuck, they deserve to be caught. That’s just natural selection. Mostly, I’m mad because the first two chapters actually seemed decent and encouraged me to spend my money to read the rest, which was a complete letdown. In my opinion, don’t waste your money, because this app is definitely not worth it. There are plenty of other excellent Choice of Games stories out there where your choices and stats actually matter and which are so much more engaging and entertaining.

the ending to this story was very disappointing. not worth the money

Really short

It was a pretty cool game but it was short and there was rly only one romance option: your patron. Towards the end it felt kind of rushed, like I expected a lot from the beginning.

I enjoyed the whimsy and it was entertaining. A bit short though.

Letdown

The story was not bad but it was short and the choices really didn’t affect the game. I tried several different choices and the outcome was the same. The characters were really rushed and I didn’t feel anything for any of them.

Cheated me!

This game was great. Until it became a rip off. I chose to try out the first 2 chapters for free, and then bought the remaining story because I wanted to continue. Once I bought it-- the game notified me that it could not download the latest version of the story. My money is gone and a few days later it still won't work.

Boring

I found this game boring. There weren't as many endings as I'd hoped. I was really disappointed that the story had little to do with mermaids. I feel like discovering mermaids, if explored more in-depth, would have been an incredibly exciting storyline, but this was an opportunity lost. The only details that I could come up with about mermaids after this game were that mermaids had scales, lived underwater, had sharp teeth, and apparently like bacon. I feel like there wasn't much imagination put into this story and am saddened by that.

4/5

I'm actually really confused about where all the hate for this is coming from. The writing is great, and it actually reminds me of Lemony Snicket's, somewhat: quirky and humorous. Plus the story itself is good and the characters have decent development.
