We’re here to help you make the most of your time in the hills and mountains.
As well as stunning photography and top-class writing, we are famous for the rigour of our gear reviews. Our reviewers are the country’s most experienced team of testers – including world-renowned backpacking experts and long-distance walker, Chris Townsend – and we always ensure gear is put through its paces in challenging mountainous environments. Our essential skills advice is written by top outdoor instructors, guides, and experts.
Our roster of contributors ranges from established outdoor writers and authors to younger, up and coming voices who reflect a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
We are also proud to have a long-running association with The Great Outdoors Challenge – a brilliant and unique backpacking event that takes place every year in the Scottish Highlands.

This is a free app download. Within the app users can purchase the current issue and back issues.
Subscriptions are also available within the application. A subscription will start from the latest regular issue at the time of purchase.
-The subscription will renew automatically unless cancelled more than 24 hours before the end of the current period. You will be charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of the current period, for the same duration and at the current subscription rate for the product.
-You may turn off the auto-renewal of subscriptions through your Account Settings, however you are not able to cancel the current subscription during its active period.
-Payment will be charged to your iTunes account at confirmation of purchase and any unused portion of a free trial period, if offered, will be forfeited when a subscription to that publication is purchased.
-If a subscription offers a free trial, at the end of the trial period, you will be charged the full price of the subscription. You may cancel a subscription during its free trial period via the subscription settings on your iTunes account. This must be done 24 hours before the end of the subscription period to avoid being charged.
Users can register for/ login to a pocketmags account in-app. This will protect their issues in the case of a lost device and allow browsing of purchases on multiple platforms. Existing pocketmags users can retrieve their purchases by logging into their account.
We recommend loading the app for the first time in a wi-fi area so that all issue data is retrieved.
If your app will not load past the splash page after a first install or an update, please delete and reinstall the app from the App Store

The magazine is still full of great content as always and the price is great compared to on the stand however one of the main reasons I buy this magazine is for the beautiful high definition photos of the great outdoors, but when zooming in on the magazine on my iPad the images blur. Other publications like Trail Magazine manage to do this on their iPad editions, I really hope TGO does soon, until then I think I'd rather pay more for a nice big HD piece of paper!

This magazine hasn't been optimised for tablet use. You're only buying a PDF version of the magazine, which has incredibly small font text. When using it in portrait mode you get one small page, swapping to landscape mode gives you two even smaller pages. You have to zoom in on the page so much that you lose all of the contextual layout of the magazine article and you find yourself dragging the page all over to read text and see associated images. Other magazine apps and books I've used have been properly optimised for tablet use and have the ability to display a single page in landscape mode, which results in larger text, and they also have the text set out to flow as you scroll down a page. This gives them a more natural reading feel. I gave up after reading the first two or three pages of the TGO magazine app and went out and bought the paper version of the magazine. This had the potential to be a great app, but £2.99 for an unusable PDF is, in my opinion, a waste of money. I've deleted the app from my iPad.
