When recording observations the last thing you want to be doing is looking down at your device, struggling with typos, entering times.
Timestamped Field Notes allows efficient note taking; time-stamping each entry as you make it. Simply tap buttons to record the most commonly recorded events (or most used words), significantly reducing the need for typing. Fallback to the keyboard only when required.
Export your notes in chronological order by exporting to cloud storage as CSV, JSON or plain text.
Timestamped Field Notes supports timestamps to minutes or to seconds; configurable to display and/or export seconds (although they are always stored in case you change your mind.) Dates and/or Times can be exported.
Note: Initially developed for monitoring nesting Peregrine Falcons (recording audibles, location activity, territory behaviors) this application can be configured for other time-stamped note taking endeavors:
- Behavioral Event Recording (wildlife species, human subjects; students/teachers/patients/other.)
- Personal well-being journal or daily notes log.
- Marking key time points in interviews for easier post production (e.g. video editing.)
- Interview note taking.
Timestamped Field Notes supports multiple keyword sets.

Timestamped Field Notes Reviews
Apple Watch Functionality Unreliable
The app on the iPhone works brilliantly, exactly as you’d expect. I primarily bought this for use with the Apple Watch, though and have found this to be unreliable. If there is too long of a gap between inputs, the app on the phone will stop syncing with the Watch, so you’ll think you’re recording times on the watch, open the app and they’ll all be queued up in one note and will then record this note at whatever time you opened the app, losing the data you thought you’d been collecting.
If the Apple Watch component was more independent, instead of effectively being a sort of remote for the iPhone app, this wouldn’t be an issue. As it stands, you have to constantly check that times you’ve recorded on your watch have made it to to the phone correctly, which defeats the point of having easy access on your wrist because you’re constantly pulling your phone out anyway.
Great app for logging events in real time
Great app for logging events in real time, I think I’ve only scratched the surface in my use of this app - but it’s certainly proved to be worthwhile.
Would be great if you could adjust text size from within the app
Security Perspective
I have to do patrols hitting different doors and recording the time. I don’t know exactly what I’m doing yet. But doing test runs and not having the note load onto my iphone 12 from my ultra. Makes me question the reliability. Chances are its user error but its seems kind of confusing.
Huh?
This makes no sense and the “instructions” are meaningless. Sorry I spent the money!
Great app!
Exactly what I want it to do. Glad someone developed this and made it free. Saved tons of time for me.
More uses
I actually use this for quick notes for client rounds work’s great
Big improvements
I’ve used this off and on as a flight Medic to time stamp procedures and medications in flight. The first couple of versions were a little buggy but seems to work great now
Android version better
Mystifyingly complex and hard to use compared with Android version. Latest update seems to have eliminated the ability to view and select an entire record, removing my only workaround to the nonfunctional share options.
How do you change experiment?
If you remove all events recorded, cannot go back to note taking since you have to tap on an event to do that and you have deleted them.!?! Finally got to use the other set of keywords for my new experiment after a lot of random fumbling, deleting old set of keywords which still appeared in note taking, killing and restarting the app many times until whatever I wanted somehow appeared such as the new set of keywords. Looks like not-ready-for-prime-time app. Very high maintenance to figure out. No documentation to help in the hard stuff to do. Too bad, once I gyrated the app, tortured myself, cursed oh so many times, I got to where I needed to be and it worked wonderfully for my on-going data collection. Will not use it after this experiment . Maybe if I kill it and re-install from scratch (pretty lame)... recommended for one time use if you configure perfectly out of the box (unlikely). Get to work developing guys, you offer something quite useful. Please make it a grownup app rather than a disposable toy.
Great app for observational data collection
I've been using the app for a number of years to collect data on a variety of animal species. This app is great because of how customizable it is. I am a professor and the undergraduates in my lab are able to learn how to use the app quickly. I think this is a much better option for many people than some of the very expensive specialty software for animal observations. The developer is also very responsive to feedback and questions.
